Then something incredible happened. A Board Member, Rev. Issac Allgood stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam for the rejected young man. Rev. Allgood had recently retired and been widowed. The overwhelming changes in his life had created a void that needed to be filled.
“Dr. Payne I’d like to take the boy for the remainder of the school term? Six months is all I ask. If I can’t turn him around, you can send him off to that boy’s ranch in the boonies.”
“Have you taken leave of your senses Reverend? Trevar is nothing but trouble. No, I’m afraid he’s run out of chances.”
“I assure you I am in complete control of my faculties. I have lots of time on my hands, plenty of empty rooms that need activity, and the silence is deafening. Six months—give me six months?”
After six weeks, Trevar and Rev. Allgood were still in the honeymoon stage, but Trevar was calmer than he’d been in a long time. It was amazing what the solitude of the country and the menagerie of animals Issac had accumulated had done for the wayward 15 year old.
Trevar got himself up before the sun every morning to get his assigned chores done before school. Rev Allgood prepared him an old fashion breakfast like his mom had done for him, and his Bess had done for their boys.
He prayed constantly for the boy, but he didn’t push his faith on Trevar. The Holy Spirit had whispered to him that Trevar would follow if he marked the path well.
A call came from the school at the beginning of week seven. Seems Trevar had been in a fight and needed to be picked up. The principal explained that Trevar had been in a scuffle with several boys. “He just doesn’t fit in here.” The principal said. “He’s going to have a tough time here if he doesn’t calm down.”
The Reverend listened nodding his head in affirmation before finally speaking. “I do not want Trevar fighting, but I do not want others attacking him for whatever their reasons. I’d hoped to keep him in this school until the end of the term, but apparently that isn’t going to work. Can I withdraw him today?”
“Certainly. I think that’s a wise decision. Let me get his papers together. Wait here.” As the principal walked away, Issac put his arm around Trevar’s shoulders.
“Well, son this school isn’t what we need. Let’s find out where you fit in.” Trevar’s eyes bugged a bit. He had tried to tell his guardians that things were not always his fault, but they never believed him.
Rev. Allgood prayed for guidance as to where to school his young ward. During the night he had a dream about the boy. In his dream, he saw doctors doing diagnostic tests on Trevar. They checked his hearing, his vision, his comprehension and his motor skills. He saw Trevar being tested for learning disorders, too.
Issac took Trevar to doctors and their tests revealed that he had significant hearing loss in both ears. The learning tests revealed that although Trevar was an excellent reader, he had a difficult time communicating which frustrated him so much, he acted out. The specialist suggested that homeschool could be a great option for Trevar.
Rev Allgood gathered the materials and signed Trevar up in a virtual classroom on-line. He bought a new laptop computer, and a special headset that assisted with Trevar’s hearing loss.
Four months into Trevar’s life with Rev. Allgood while they cleaned the kitchen after supper, Trevar asked, “Why did you let me come here?”
Pondering his response carefully, Issac replied, “Everyone needs someone to take a chance on them. Someone took a chance on me once, and it changed my life. And besides, I was lonely. You don’t seem so bad to me. How’s this working for you, Trevar?”
“I never wanted to prove anyone wrong before. They said I was bad, so I was. Now, I want to prove ‘em all wrong, and prove that you were right.”
