The swirls my spoon had made in my coffee were slowly disappearing. My head in my hands, I whispered to the air, “Mornings are not my friend.” I had hit the snooze button three times before I roused myself enough to get up. Monday—all I could think was—it’s Monday.

The devotion book fell open to a study about Paul, and his ability to be content in all his circumstances. Wow! Wrapping my mind around that concept wasn’t easy on Monday morning at seven o’clock. Trying to pray, I said, “Lord, I am thankful for my job, but I wish I worked nights. I just don’t do mornings. Help me, please.”

Finally ready, I raced to the elevator, but wouldn’t you know it was stuck in the basement fourteen floors below me. Fourteen floors later, I staggered out of the stairwell headed to my car. My mind was focused on the time I had lost. I had to hurry.

Traffic was a beast. Sometime later, I was able to pull out of the parking garage onto the street. I caught every light on the boulevard. Time ticked away. My emotions became more and more agitated. “Come on!” I shouted.

Road rage was trying to rear its ugly head, but I had promised myself I wouldn’t succumb to it again. “Lord, I need your help. Gimme a break in this traffic, would ya?”

Waiting for another light, I turned on the radio. Contemporary Christian, my choice of music immediately filled the agitating air around me. My tense shoulders relaxed. My eyes re-focused on the beauty of the new day. The presence of the Lord came into my car through the words and melodies evoking within me a deep peace that quickly overshadowed the negative emotions that were provoking me. “Hallelujah.” I shouted aloud.

Driving the last few blocks to my workplace, I continued basking in God’s presence. It’s amazing what music can do in your mind and heart and spirit. All my griping and fuming about mornings and traffic and my job were still swirling around in my head, but the peace was overtaking them and blending them into a new melody, a sweet melody that eased my stress and brought me fresh perspective about what is truly important, in this life.
