Tracey sat behind the table armed with an assortment of pens gleaned from every corner of her house. She was nervous, this being her first time in a leadership position. She had been persuaded to pass her skills on to others by her husband who stood at the back of the room catching her eye and smiling broadly in encouragement.
"Just sign the register please, if you wouldn't mind." She tried to introduce a note of authority into her voice, but worried that she might sound bossy.
The sheet, created by her eldest daughter, on her college laptop, looked very professional. "Obedience Class" was printed, bold and black across the top of the page. Spaces were provided to list the names of those present.
"I put my name here, yes? I am Lucy. An this delightful little chap is Sam." Tracey looked down at Sam, sitting quietly on the floor, a mass of spiky brown hair and deep serious eyes. He was drooling a little, but looked quite biddable.
Tracey shook the hand outstretched towards her in what she hoped was a firm grip and turned to face the next woman.
"Hello, I am Jane. Nice to meet you. I hope you have got the answers we are looking for. You are getting to be quite a handful now, aren't you Lily?" Lily had long legs and silky chestnut hair. She looked like a barely contained bundle of energy ready to explode around the room at any moment. Bright eyes sparkled with mischief.
The last woman in the line looked awkward and nervous, chewing on her bottom lip.
"And who is this?" Tracey quite a shy woman. In was in her nature to draw back to the outskirts of a group, but she was determined to put the woman at ease.
"This is Hyacynth. She is quite shy. Gerard and I thought coming a class and meeting with…well with others might help." The woman, Katherine Hewlitt, held up Hyacinth in her arms. Her small body wriggled, the light glinting off her smooth black hair.
Tracey did a quick count of the names on the list. There were about twenty adults. She hoped that it was not going to be too big a class for her to manage. She stood up and clapped her hands together to get everyone's attention. Easing herself away from behind the table, she moved to stand just in front of the stage.
"Good evening everyone. My name is Tracey. I am glad that you see you all here and hope over the next few weeks to get to know you all much more personally. As you are aware, it has been recognised for quite a while that a class like this is needed. We see the signs all around us that boundaries need to be set and good behaviour needs to be encouraged in our…children….our first lesson is all about saying NO"
Tracey placed a bright coloured ornament on a small table in the centre of the room. She wondered which of the children would be the first to take the bait.
"Me want, mummy."
Sam, with his spiky brown hair, wasn't sitting on the floor any more, but had pulled himself to his feet and was toddling over to the table with unsteady steps. Shamefaced, his mother, Lucy, grabbed him by the straps of his dungarees and hauled him away.
