Most of the students kept listening to their teacher. A few were writing notes while others were busy texting messages. Abel however listened carefully to what Reena was saying. “Are we all then descended from apes?” he mused as Reena went on for long, continuing to expound the theory.
“There’s plenty of evidence to show that there has been a survival of the fittest. Species have been changing from the beginning. Better and better equipped species have evolved through all these billions of years. We humans have evolved as the most hardy of all the species.” Concluded Reena.
Abel couldn’t but pipe in, “Can I ask you something? Ma’am. Can apes and Orang utans think?”
Reena hesitated a second. “Of course they can” she replied, “They do think indeed. They have a brain which helps them think Abel.”
Abel countered, “I am sure they can think of food, foraging and foes, Ma’am. But can they think as we do, of abstract things such as love, hate, mercy and justice?”
Reena was quiet for a moment as she thought. “I …I” she hesitated, “am not sure. Perhaps they can. We do know that they communicate with one another. They have social order and groups.”
“Ma’am, you and I are here discussing whether apes and Orang utans can think. That shows that we are highly developed as a species. But I feel that we couldn’t have evolved from apes. Are they the life forms immediately lower than us humans? Enquired Abel.
Reena took a step back and then said, “If you mean – have humans evolved directly form apes? I suppose the answer is yes.”
Abel was leaning forward. “Then, shouldn’t they at least have some primitive abstract thinking skills Ma’am?” he questioned with a smile.
“Well perhaps there were some intermediate life forms between apes and us.” Said Reena as she tried to smile at Abel.
“But where are they? Why can’t we see them now?” continued Abel persistently.
Reena was losing her patience now. She said a little sharply, “Perhaps they have become extinct. It’s been billions of years you know.”
Abel continued to smile. He was enjoying himself. The boys and girls in the class were listening with interest at the dialogue between Reena and Abel.
“How can it be Ma’am?” asked Abel after a minute, “You told us today that better life forms evolved through the ages. How can these forms, who are better equipped to survive be lost when les evolved types are still existing?”
Reena was not able to answer. Abel continued, “Ma’am, I don’t mean to say anything against you. But will you kindly to listen to my point of view?”
“Okay, speak up and let us know?” she permitted.
Abel smiled and said confidently, “I believe that we all were created by a living God. Humans as well as animals. By an act of special creation God made us all. He created Adam and Eve, our fore fathers, and made them to be over all the flora and fauna of the earth.”
“From where do you get all this information from Abel? Asked Reena as she looked at him with interest.
“I believe in the Holy Bible as the word of God Ma’am”, answered Abel humbly, “The first book Genesis gives a clear account of the origin of man. I think Ma’am that this is the best account of our origin, with all due apologies to you and Uncle Darwin.”
The boys and girls were smiling quietly. Reena sat down in her chair. She was thinking.
