Topic: Eek! (02/25/10)
I hate it when I sit down at my computer and my head suddenly becomes void of thought. It doesn’t matter that seconds earlier I’d had the most profound bought of inspiration; something that would have gone perfectly with whatever I’d been previously writing or with a chosen prompt. It makes me want to say “eek” and perhaps cover my eyes or tug at my own hair just a bit. It’s frustrating.

I must back up. We don’t say hate at our house. Goes back to a time when I was young. My mother did not allow words like hate and liar. I have noticed it slipping into my vocabulary more as of late. One of the characters in my latest book is dealing with some issues of disliking her new step-mom to the extreme. Actually, she hates her, or so it seems, and wishes she was dead…or so they both think. It’s causing the main character to have an “eek” moment of her own as she begins to believe the 15 year old is trying to kill her. I like twists, so there is a bit of the unexpected that goes along with that story line. Hatred can definitely make a person do some surprising things.

The Bible is sprinkled with warnings of hatred leading to acts of no good. We see it in the story of Cain and Abel. There are times when God rewards the hated, as in the case of Leah and Rachel or Joseph with his brothers. The Bible equates hatred with murder in 1 John 3:15. Jesus even tells us to love our enemies and do good to them that hate us. Wow! That’s a hard one to follow.

Proverbs tells us to feed our enemies if they are hungry or thirsty for in doing so we shall heap coals of fire upon their heads and God will reward us. What if we feed them the Word of God and allow them to drink from the spring of Living Water? What if they see the light of God shining in us and they turn from their evil ways? Of course there are those who will run away shrieking their own “eek”! They won’t know what to make of us and the love we will lavish upon them.

Now what was I talking about? It seems my thoughts have begun to ramble again when only seconds before they were flowing forth so very nearly cohesively; at least it seemed that way to me. Perhaps it is due to the hustle and bustle of life. Homework, dinner, band concerts, bath times…so many activities that make up life. Those same activities can make it hard to concentrate, even on our Lord and the spiritual aspects of life that are so very important. We have to be careful so the seeds that are sown into our hearts aren’t choked out by the thorns or cares of this world robbing us from bringing forth fruit.

It’s time to get quiet. Time to read and pray and fill my heart so that hatred and lies and the cares of this world have no place to reside and when I hear them or feel them I can brush them away and send them running. I shall chase them with a spiritual broom and enjoy it greatly as I listen to them scream “eek!”

What a lovely Bible lesson. I agree the word hate is used too readily now-a-days. Thanks for the reminder.

For me anyway) Received a very good message from this: Using the word itself and the emotions of hate, towards anything, including objects, is non-nourishing to those seeds from the Lord, sown in our hearts.

I too share in your bouts of loosing those moments of inspiration and it is definitely, frustrating!

You used a few phrases that really touched me:
cares of this world robbing us from bringing forth fruit
and
shall chase them with a spiritual broom. Especially and absolutely liked this one!

I grew up in a h___ful environment and vowed to never use those kind of words with my own family. Nice devotional and reminder of what hate is all about.
