Except for the light of my fire, I am surrounded by darkness; the thick, inky, pervasive night. The stars and the moon are obscured by the cloud covering, but that is all just as well with me as the burdensome cares of this world have encroached upon me with the devastating swiftness. This time away was to restore me, yet I feel hollow.
“Lord, where am I to go from here?”
Silence returned my cry.
“How am I to know what to do?”
The dying embers of the fire matched my hope. I fanned the coals futilely. I can only reason that I need more wood. Rising from my seat on a fallen log, I begin to search the nearby brush. No luck. With my flashlight I walk through the surrounding wood, gleaning a piece here and there. Roots and uneven ground hamper my journey. Only my flashlight offers any safety to my footfall.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”*
No sooner has that verse crossed my mind then my flashlight goes out. I stand in utter darkness, frantically tapping the useless tool. Turning around I cannot see the path, I cannot see my camp, and I cannot see my hand in front of my face.
“Now what, Lord?” I cry in despair. “I don’t want to be left in this darkness.”
A small breeze whispers through the tops of the trees. A verse comes to my soul. “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”**
Ahead I see a faint glow, which begins to grow larger. The campfire burns once more, and I pick my way towards its growing light.
I am not alone. His song is with me in the night. I sit by the light of the flickering flame, my hungry eyes devouring God’s word before me, which is the light to my soul, and the hope of my future.

My favorite lines are:
"The night songs of the crickets and the frogs ring loudly, and act as the backdrop to the wanderings of my solitary soul. Alone, I am completely alone." They have such a "moody" feel to them!
Great job! :)
