What about those nice, homemade, fluffy waffles the kids didn’t finish this morning? Hmmmm?
I hesitate for just a moment, then determinedly choose the former, my fingertips begging to drop the hot bowl as I maneuver to the table with it in one hand and the two glasses in the other. Maybe I should add some strawberries…no, I’ll save them for a snack this afternoon, mixed with a banana and some low-fat, vanilla yogurt.
Strawberries are sooooooo delicious on top of waffles! Just think about THAT! Mmmmmm…
I do ponder it, then remember that, “ If you find honey, eat just enough--too much of it and you will vomit.”*
When the mid-morning munchies strike, they do not find me unprepared! A tasty, whole-wheat English muffin with just a touch of peanut butter spread on top, and a steaming cup of tea while I watch the news.
Bo..ring… English muffins aren’t nearly as scrumptious as waffles, now are they? And you always forget they’re in the toaster, so you end up with “English rocks” that have, in the past, actually chipped a tooth.
Very clever, but my teeth practically break even when I chew gum! Besides, “My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods.”*
For lunch….I pull out the amazing, five-star salad that I put together last night. Fresh, romaine lettuce, homegrown beefsteak tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as cubes of leftover barbequed chicken and a topping of shredded cheddar. Adding a McIntosh apple that I just cut up, I toss everything with a squirt of light ranch dressing. My Grammy would have been proud; this gargantuan salad in a mixing bowl reminded me of the ones she ate for years.
Aren’t you tired of all this? Has it really gotten you anywhere, anyway? You weigh the same as you did last week, and those old jeans you dared to try on last night are still too tight.
Yes, I know. But, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”* I shouldn’t have allowed you to smooth-talk me into trying them on this soon anyway. Besides, it’s not all about the weight. I feel so much better now that I’m exercising and eating healthier. AND, my kids are following my example too!
Hmmm…kids will be home from school soon, and my stomach is rumbling. I spoon my yogurt into a cereal bowl, slice up the one banana that isn’t ready to be made into bread, and add a generous portion of juicy, melt in your mouth strawberries. This is a perfect treat!
That yogurt reminds me of something….let’s see…Ah-ha! Did you forget about the creamy, vanilla-bean ICE-CREAM in the freezer? Now that would be awesome! Wait! What if you took out the waffles, heated them in the microwave, then topped them with both ice-cream AND strawberries? That is what I call a treat!
AAAAGGGHH!!! This is so hard!! I really want those waffles! I haven’t given in all day, what can just ONE indulgence hurt? But then an entire day’s worth of efforts are down the drain. NO…not this time…I can have them anytime I want; maybe tomorrow, or the next day, but not today. Because today, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”*
Bah-humbug! If only you’d slept in a little later this morning. I can always get you when you skip your time with HIM! Don’t worry, I’ll be back. Not today? Maybe tomorrow then…
Settling into bed, I realize that I’d better set my alarm just a little bit earlier…

Thanks! Colin.
Loved the description of the food and the persistance which you stuck by using Bible verses to combat temptation. Something we all need to learn.
