12-2-1955 Mama and Papa drove downtown to shop. I really hope they buy me a Darling Debbie doll just like the one I saw in the Sears catalog. Nana said she’s going to read us the Christmas story in Luke.
12-3-1958 I’m going to sing in the choir at the church Christmas pageant. I should practice while I help Mama bake the pecan pies. “Angels we have heard on high.”
12-4-1960 After Sunday school today I now understand what Christmas is all about. God sent His son to Earth as a gift to all people. I can’t wait to celebrate Jesus’ birthday.
12-5-1965 We have extra rehearsals all week for the school concert. I hope my sore throat clears up before the show.
12-6-1968 Only two days until I take the train home for vacation. Mama’s probably started baking the pies and gingerbread. She must miss not having Nana helping her.
12-7-1970 Colin invited me to go skiing with his family Christmas week. I should buy a new jacket and boots. Maybe he’ll pop the question!
12-8-1971 My first Christmas as Mrs. Colin Anderson. So much to do. Decorate, bake, write cards, wrap I’m glad Emiline suggested we can shop together. How did Mama find time to do all this?
12-9-1976 “Brittany, sweetheart, please don’t grab the ornaments.” I’d better clear the bottom third of the tree after dinner.
12-10-1981 I asked Colin to buy a small tree and he comes home with one half the size of the living room. Maybe we should buy one of those artificial trees next year.
12-11-1983 Brittany and Becca have begged for Cabbage Patch dolls. I’ve driven to three stores and each one is sold out. There must be something else they want.
12-12-1987 “Colin, please feed the girls and drive them to the church for rehearsal. I need to run to the fabric store. The angels need new robes.”
12-13-1990 Mother Anderson doesn’t want to spend Christmas at the ski resort this year. Being around the grandkids will cheer her up. We’ll take her to the early Christmas Eve service.
12-14-1992 I wish Emiline was here to help with all this wrapping. I miss our annual shop and wrap day. In her letter, she said she’d return from Tanzania by New Year’s. It’s not the same without Mama and Papa around either.
12-15-1995 Where did I put Mama’s recipe book? Christopher and his family are coming over and I promised to teach the kids how to make gingerbread. I can’t find anything in this house. Why did Colin’s company decide to transfer him in November?
12-16-1997 The girls aren’t coming home for Christmas this year. I should cut this grocery list in half. No sense in having a huge mountain of leftovers.
12-17-2000 How did I let Colin talk me into a Hawaiian holiday? Christmas with pineapples and palm trees? I need to buy some sandals. At least he remembered to book a late flight so we can go to the Christmas Eve service.
12-18-2005 One week to Christmas. Thirty-five spent with Colin and now this may be our last together. Hopefully the doctor will discharge him tomorrow. Christopher will read the Christmas story to the family at dinner.
12-19-2006 I miss Colin. The house is so quiet without him around. Nobody to sing carols with or help put up the tree.
12-20-2010 I remember the stack of catalogs that arrived in the mail every fall. Now everyone shops online. I can hardly see those tiny pictures on the screen. Which of these dolls would Macie like? I’ll send Becca an e-mail and ask.
12-21-2014 Five grandchildren coming in four days. Three pecan pies to bake for two daughters to take home. One excited grandmother.
12-22-2020 I think this will be my last year singing in the church choir. Driving at night is too hard.
12-23-2025 I hope the girls bring the grandchildren to visit. It’s so lonely here at Mountain View Manor. I wish I had saved some decorations before moving here.
12-24-2030 “I’m sorry. She doesn’t have much time left.”
I hope tomorrow I’ll be at home in heaven and singing with the angels to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
