Jimmy slept snugly tucked in beside his mom as Christmas Eve morning rolled around. The snow was falling lightly on Old Eds Christmas Tree Farm. It was so cozy and wintry there on the hill side that little Jimmy forgot who he was.
He was suddenly brought back from his little nap when a soft tender voice said, “Hey Jimmy, my little sweet heart, straighten up, remember who you are. You are a Virginian pine! You have to stand tall and straight. Don’t forget to catch the snow flakes as they drift among your cones. Maybe, if you catch enough snow and it layers tall and thick, those people won’t notice the hole in the very middle of your left side”. She continued talking in a slow southern voice that Jimmy had adored listening to now for five whole years, “You must remember what I taught you Jimmy that the most wonderful thing that can happen to a Virginia pine is to be decorated and used in celebration of the little baby boy who was born in a manger on Christmas Day”.
She shared some more things with him that he had heard before, but he just let her talk on, “You know something Jimmy we were once considered a forest weed, but as the years went by and we got just the right about of sun light and the right care from Father, we became famous. Now we are the most favored trees among the needles as Christmas trees”.
This day was considered the busiest day of the year there at Old Eds farm, because this was the day before Christmas. The families started shopping for trees as early as seven in the morning and did not quit until the closing hour of seven that night.
The lights exploded the hill side promptly at the right minute; the hill side was alive with singing and dancing that those humans would never be able to hear. The hearts and voices of all those trees came alive with the sounds of Christmas.
The little snow flakes bounced with joy all over that green hill side as they anticipated the arrival of the greatest team on earth, the family.
Jimmy’s mom Crystal gave her two sons the final speech as she was chosen as the very first tree to leave the hill side. She told them how much she loved them and soon she would see them in brand new city where the Virginia pine would never die.
As the hours of the day wore on, every tree around Jimmy was chosen and he was left standing there all alone. His heart was so broken; his limbs drooped and touch the dark black soil of that Alabama Christmas tree garden.
At ten minutes till seven that evening, Jimmy stood there all alone as his needles fell and tears stained each one. He thought, “Oh no, I am going to be all alone on Christmas, I wonder if a Virginia pine is allowed to pray to the new born King”.
He reached his little limbs as high as he could toward the heavens and the north wind carried the prayer up to the throne of an on time God.
The very second little Jimmy said, “Amen”, he heard laughter and singing from someone at the gate. Jimmy got excited; he thought “It is the last shopping family of the year 2008”. It was the perfect family, a daddy, a mommy, a little girl and a tiny little boy who could barely walk.
They made stops all over that hill side at first one tree and then another and then to Jimmy’s amazement, that little boy stopped dead still right at his feet. He said, “Look, mommy isn’t he just perfect”? The mommy said, “Samuel, maybe you should take another look, he has a limb missing right there on his left side.”
Samuel said, “Yes, mommy that is the first thing I saw, he is just like me.
A limb is missing on the very left side, see the hole Mommy. I can see right through to the other side. Mommy please, let’s take him home. He will be just perfect for celebrating the birth of Baby Jesus”.
The mommy said, “Ok, honey if that is what you want. She turned to the daddy and said, “Honey will you please go get Ed, looks like we have found the perfect tree”!
