Standing only five foot two, the accordion Ruth carried on these happy singing sessions in the cold, ice and sleet of winter seemed bigger than she was; but not a Christmas went by that she wasn't out in the neighborhoods playing her "squeeze box" and giving the Carollers their backup music.
Ruth's accordion gave the singers the "oomph" they needed to be heard and to bring residents to their windows to see and hear the little group of Carollers bundled up, out in the snow, bringing them cheer, blessings and happiness during their hectic week of Holiday preparations and shopping and give to them a glimpse of what the Holiday Season is all about...in song.
From the time I was five years old until I left home at eighteen...I can't remember a single Christmas that Ruth wasn't out there every evening during that special week carrying her larger than life accordion, trudging through the snow, and accompanying the Carollers singing Christmas carols all through the neighborhood streets of our little town.
My mother Ruth, who has now gone to her temporary resting place to await the sound of Gabriels's trumpet, will no doubt accompany the angels one day when they sing their song of redemption up in Heaven - and I hope to be there to see and hear my mother once again.... squeezing her old accordion back and forth as she sings His praises.
Mother accompanied the Carollers faithfully down here on Earth, and one day I betcha Gabriel will let her play alongside him Up There!
