Harbor treacherous secrets, and cherish what’s past as dark and unforgivable.
Though each day, His grace visits us anew, we refuse to believe it satisfies,
And so get up and dress our souls again with pleasing thoughts of guilt and shameful lies.
And we delight in this unworthiness but not so as to magnify His grace;
Instead we piously assure ourselves of our complicity with Adam’s race.
We resist His grace, for in its power we would undoubtedly forget our sin
And be no longer master of our souls, but helpless, we would lose ourselves in Him.
But again this weight of shame emboldens, that perhaps, we may yet give recompense;
In our remembering what God forgot, we still attempt to prove our competence.
So then, through memory, we seek to find that which, where the points of every compass meet,
His grace once forgave, forgot, and buried in the depths of impenetrable deep.
