"I know it's hard to believe, but according to my testing this woman's body is 13 billion years old," said Levangie. "I still can't quite believe it myself, but I quadruple checked everything. It's the only thing that makes sense. Well, sort of..."
"Impossible! You seriously think this woman was born millions of years before the dinosaurs?"
"Now Ziggy, I know you're not a believer. But, if you ask me, it's no coincidence that we've dubbed this find 'Eve'. I think what -- who, we have here is the Eve, of biblical times."
Utzig slapped his forehead. "But this just can't be."
Levangie led his colleague over to the spectramorgoscope. "I sampled her clothing, which contained minute amounts of perspiration. She’s so perfectly preserved; I didn’t want to disturb her. I know it's shocking. But Ziggy, this is the greatest find of all time! Take another look," he said gently. "At first glance she looks like a modern day human. However, her brain is far more advanced than ours. That is, humans of today."
"You're saying the human race has devolved?"said Utzig.
"Um, actually, yes. But think of the applications. ‘Eve’ is our answer, for everything. By comparing her DNA with the data in our datembases, we could potentially find the cure for every disease known to man. Laseroscopic analysis shows no markers for cancer or any other diseases. She died of old age -- at the ripe old age of, ahem, 930."
“Did you say 930?” Utzig shook his head. "I think I’m coming down with a migraine."
"With her help,” said Levangie, nodding at ‘Eve’, “We could maybe find a cure for that, too. Seriously, you have got to see her temporal lobe.” He brought up a series of images on the putersphere. “From studies back in the 2100s we know that this part of the brain is enlarged in holy people. In Eve here, who was once so close to God, this region is immense. It’s 90% larger than in the vast majority of people today. Ziggy, she used all of her brain. You can see it in this cross-section, here, here, and here.”
“Ah.” Utzig eyed the scans. “The parietal lobe is much smaller than typical as well.”
“Yes. We know the parietal lobe is related to one’s sense of self. Eve wasn’t perfect, but she really was God-centered. This proves it. People nowadays…”
"Um… what about him?" whispered Utzig.
"Who? Adam?" Levangie smiled. "I thought you weren't a believer."
"I’m not. Well, I wasn’t. A person's got a right to change his mind, hasn't he? And this, my friend, is indisputable evidence of… of Something."
"Or Someone; Someone far greater than you or I. Here, the Bible says, By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." That is Adam’s fate, according to Genesis 3:19 [NLT]." Levangie put away the small Bible he kept in his back pocket.
"OK, don't laugh, but what if… We have to consider the alternatives. Perhaps she was... from another planet?"
Levangie chuckled. "Another time, yes. Another planet? I don’t think so. DNA analysis proves she is fully human. However, she was the first woman, created by God. She looks perfect to me, but, ahem, obviously there were flaws. -- Flaws that have been compounded and mutated across the ages… We've come a long way since then, and not in a good way I'm afraid. The fall from grace was quite a fall indeed.”
“So as the universe is expanding, humans… are shrinking? I mean our brains are; how much of it we use, as we have grown further away from God. …What do we do, to re-enlarge these regions of our brains, to become… more like her?”
“Well, I believe the first step is just that -- to believe. We must stop wasting our time on frivolous pursuits and work toward a much closer relationship with God.”
“I’m ready Vangie. I really am.” As he hadn’t done since he was a small boy, Utzig kneeled on the hard floor, head bowed in prayer.
“This is a sign, a sign for all of us,” said Levangie, joining him. “An unmistakable sign… to mend our ways... to believe. We must spread the word.”
