“We are not talking about how people interpret our shapes, dear, but the actual shape. And since I have no corners or boundaries I think I should win, hands down. I am easily squished with no corners to protect me.”
Felicity Circle tried to demonstrate by bouncing up and down on the stage but just ended up jumping right into the arms of Rico Heart who said, “Just listen to any country song and you will know how easily I am broken. On top of that, I am never any color but red. How boring.”
“Oh, I know all about being one-toned, brother. When they see a star, out comes the yellow crayon,” Yolanda Star complained. “I have so many corners, I can’t fit anywhere.”
“Amen, to that one.” Oliver Triangle jumped up on the stage emphasizing his pointed head. “I don’t have an even number of points.”
“My sides are not even,” Gary Rectangle piped in. “Therefore, like Felicity Circle, I am easily squished. And Belinda Square, she can withstand pressure better than I can.”
“Yes, that’s true Mr. Rectangle. But my corners are a source of pain for many people when they run into me. I don’t like it.”
Tommy Diamond agreed with Ms. Square. Corners were good for self-protection, but it all came at a cost. “Kites, are diamonds and kites don’t last long, especially the cheap ones. They are always getting tangled and into messes where they don’t belong.”
“That’s not fair. We are supposed to leave our associations behind. Isn’t that right Ms. Oval?” Felicity Circle tried to bring the conversation around to the main point. But, all she managed to do was incite discord among the group.
“Order, order,” Petunia Oval once again shouted over the arguments. “We all have items that carry our shape. We are also all created beings, having been drawn by someone. Can’t we get along? Or do we have to settle this argument?”
“Of course we do.” The answer came in unison.
“Well, you can count me out. I don’t want to deal with this anymore.” And she hopped away.
Five minutes later the entire group was at her doorstep. “We have decided that you win the prize Petunia.” Oliver Triangle offered her the prize. “By walking away first you proved to us all that you are the most sensitive. Sensitive means fragile.”
“Oh, I thought it meant I was the strongest. I’m the first to realize our argument is so silly it will never be solved!” Purple Petunia Oval managed to crack the first smile of the day!
