I know you are wondering where I am, and probably worried you haven't heard from me in the last few days. Since our phones have been shut off, I thought I better write you a letter to let you in on some things you need to know right away. You might want to sit down when you read this.
First of all, I just want to let you know how much I love you, and I can only hope that after you read this, you'll be able to forgive me and still want to be my wife.
Remember, about a month ago, when I pulled an all nighter with Jim and Frank? I've been meaning to tell you the details on what went on that night before now, but I never could find the right time. But now, I can't wait any longer.
Me and the boys were having our usual fun night out at Jimmy's Club when some other guys showed up. There were four of them and I'd never seen any of them before. We started playing small change bets at first and I was winning every time. It was like magic, like I couldn't lose if I tried. Then the stakes went higher. These guys started raising the ante and Frank put his wedding ring on the table with a wild look in his eyes. I've never seen him like that. Then with one role of the dice, Frank won a quick K on that round. That got me excited.
Then we changed to cards and I got brave. My hands were hot and all the cards were playing my way. I was on a crazy winning streak for a while, but then my luck started to change. My full house lost to a straight flush and I started crashing. Before I knew it, I was scrambling to win back what I had lost. I should have known I was getting in over my head, but you don't think of those things in the heat of the moment.
At the end of the night, I tried to make arrangements for paying off my debt, but those guys weren't into negotiating. Some hard faced guy called 'The Hammer' threatened to break my kneecaps if I didn't pay within the month. Not one of those guys had any sense of humor.
So, you'll probably be getting some visitors sometime soon. One of them will be some big burly guy named Rocky. When he shows up and demands the keys to the Mercedes, just give them to him and please don't ask him any questions. You should look through the car as soon as possible after reading this and get anything out of it we might want to keep before he gets there.
Also, there will be a moving truck pulling up our driveway probably in the next couple of days. Those guys will be there to pick-up most of our furniture. I know how much you love the living room set we just bought, but I promise I'll buy you another one as soon as I can. Please try NOT to throw a fit when they carry the stuff away.
I know this letter is a hard blow, but there's more. After I lost the car and the furniture, I was desperate to try to get it all back. I couldn't just walk away, and the only thing I had left to bargain with was the equity in the house. I am so sorry babe, but it looks like we are going to have to start looking for a place to rent. The next morning after that night, I was approved for a short term second on the house. It was very short term. The balloon payment was due last week.
I know you're upset right now, but it really isn't as bad as it all sounds. Really, Linda, with just one good night with Lady Luck, I could get it all back and then some. That's my plan. I promise I'll make it all up to you. When all these thugs are off my back and things look safe for me to come home, I'll be there just as quick as I can. Hopefully, it will be soon.
Love,
Nick
