We were seated around a big dining room table in the home of former college classmates. It was a hot, summer day in northern Montana, but the atmosphere was “just right” as a variety of friends caught up on life’s experiences. Across the table and to my left were most of the guests. Our little six-year-old daughter, Lisa, sat directly to my right. There was a blend of happy voices splitting the air and bouncing off the walls as good conversation dominated the dinner hour.
Lisa was quiet, not a word had escaped from her lips to warn of impending tragedy. In the midst of the joyous gaggle of people, I glanced Lisa’s way to see her sitting perfectly straight, eyes wide, no movement, and apparently not breathing. Without a moment’s hesitation I thumped her as hard as I could on the back even as I remembered being told not to do that when someone was choking. Before the others were even aware of what was happening, Lisa gasped, coughed and spit out a large chunk of meat that had apparently been lodged in her throat. She collapsed in my arms as I snuggled her close to me, thanking God for His perfect timing.
I shook with relief and gratitude as I pondered what might have happened if I hadn’t glanced at our precious daughter. She might have collapsed at the table and slipped from this life in the midst of all that good conversation and joyous laughter, changing our lives forever. Instead, within a few moments the incident was but a memory and life went sailing on..
Have you ever wondered how many times a day God protects us from harm and blesses us with a routine life? As we lay our head upon the pillow each night, our prayer might be, “Thank you, Father, for an uneventful day.” My heart overflowed with gratitude on that summer day so long ago, for the blessings of routine!
