As a child, I saw him
at his house
at the hospital
as his wife lay dying
adult, reserved, mature
As a teen, I saw him
at the lake
at the tents
at the campfire
adult, happy, family
As a young man, I saw him
at my house
as my father lay dying
and mother sat crying
and he held his daughter
and her son
and her daughter
and he brought the documents
and the knowledge and the peace
at the burial plot for dad
and he went home
and, that night, died
As an adult, I saw him
at his funeral
a few days later
at peace
As a memory, I see him
an upright, stout, man
a mentor
a guide
a wise mother’s father
a family man
Adult, reserved, mature
and Grandfather to me
In the mirror the other day, I saw him
in me
my heritage
in my genes
my body
my looks
from his linage
my age now
as his was then
and I looked
Adult, reserved, mature
And I called my daughters
to come over today
with my grandsons
to be
Grandfather to them
