You were there.
I was shiny, wet and anxious,
But you saw the sparkle, the potential, the Hope of things to come.
Early on, my journey still new,
You were there.
My steps barely left an imprint in the playground sandbox -
But you counted every shaky, adventurous one.
Down the road, though my path grew rugged -
You were there.
The din of noisy friends, the clash of conscience, the self-centeredness -
Try as I might to pull away,
You were there -
Your voice gentle at times, like a bedtime story,
Other times loud, like a sharp crack to the side of my face.
Now hear I am.
With lips pressed to cool water -
Eyes like tiny pebbles in a vast sea -
My room is empty, hollow,
But I am not.
I am filled up with you -
Your warmth glows as though I am before a hearth.
I know that this is not the first time you have held my hand.
For my journey has been long,
Sometimes I have stumbled about like a drunk in the snow.
Other times, I have walked fully upright in my own pride.
Eventually, I learned to walk in your grace, to plant my feet with humility on the narrow path.
And now, here, reaching out for what is to come,
I know that soon, I will see the face -
Of the One who has always been there.
