Dear Jesus,
I can’t wait to see you face to face so that I can tell you how grateful I am for all you have done for me. I am afraid I won’t be able to speak or even to stand upright when I see you, so I wanted to send this letter on ahead so that you will be able to at least read of my gratitude.
I realize that you already know my heart and the depths of my thanksgiving, but some things are worth saying again and again. I want to say—I have to say- “Thank-you.” As you know I was in prison for over forty years, living in the darkness of solitary confinement and being fed just enough to stay alive. Prison and hopelessness became a way of life for me. My jailer kept insisting there is no way to escape death row. I believed him for all those years. I was living to die.
One day a man came to me to tell me about you. He told me you know my name. He told me that you know my family and all about me even about my childhood. He told me that even though you know every crime I have ever committed you still love me. Just hearing someone on the outside loves me was almost too much for me to take in. But the man told me more.
The man told me you love me so much you are willing to take my place! He told me you love me so much-- no matter what I’ve done in the past or even what I will do in the future—you are willing to serve my time and to take my place on death row. At first his news was hard to believe, especially since I had never met you before. But the man said he had come to bring even more good news.
The man told me that no matter if I accepted your offer or not, YOU ALREADY HAVE TAKEN MY PLACE! He told me your name is Jesus and that you came to this earth in order to serve your entire life on death row just to die for me. You lived to die for me.
I must tell you I fell to my knees and began to kiss the feet of the man who brought me your good news. But the man told me that he is your unnamed messenger and that what I need to do is to accept your gift and to know YOU as my savior. I don’t know why you love me and I don’t know why you took my place, but because of You I am now free and living in the light. I am so glad to be living for You and for the day when I can fall at Your feet with unspeakable thanksgiving.
Forever Yours,
Grateful Heart
