“Charlie, I am telling you now, you cannot run from God. Think of what Pastor Dickerson told you! God will never leave you alone until you obey His calling!” Charlie’s mother warned.
Sixteen year old Charlie Dale had girls, fast cars, and motorcycles on his mind. Secretly, he thought that perhaps when he was old and ready to die, he and God could talk about it.
In the 1950s, with his charisma, Marlin Brando was sweeping teenagers into black motorcycle jackets and confident ways of behavior.
Charlie quickly adapted to this craze and completely ignored church and anything about God. “Catch ya, later, Jesus,” became a backseat phrase to arrogance which detested God, but who cared, Charlie was Mr. Cool. The others, well, they were Mr. Fool.
Early hours on Sunday mornings was always a hassle for the family. Charlie’s mother drove the church bus and picked up all those who were waiting to ride.
Charlie shouted down the hallway, “Sleeping in, Momma. You go on without me. You’ll will make it just fine!”
Minutes after, the sound of the bus’s engine started and the vehicle pulled off for a regular Sunday route. Charlie never gave it another thought while he rolled over in bed, fluffed his pillow, and went back to sleep.
Perhaps it was the night Charlie and few companions decided the beer truck, which always sat near the owner’s place of business, needed to be explored. God would never mind if he had a bottle of beer, and he could always ask for forgiveness, couldn’t he?
Quickly, one of the fellows cut the lock off the truck’s back door and removed a quart case of beer. It was party time, and no one would be any wiser.
The succeeding day, a local newspaper featured a column around the case and stated there would be an investigation. Charlie knew his day had come, and God most likely would let him spend time in jail. Nevertheless, God was merciful and nothing ever became of it. The owner too learned a lesson. He constantly made sure his truck was locked in the garage since then on.
It was a hot August night and Charlie had just turned 17 on the 5th. Never in his lifetime had he stolen anything. Even so, God would not leave him entirely.
During the night, he dreamed of a giant ball of fire had fallen from heaven and danced around before him. It flickered three times while a voice spoke.
In the dream, Charlie ran to his neighbor asking for help. The old man shouted, “Charlie the thing is beyond my control, and there is nothing I can do!”
In the wee hours after the dream, Charlie awakened his mother and told her about the night vision. Her reaction was much like Eli told Samuel when God bade him. “You and Him get alone and simply ask Him what He wants.”
It was 1973 before Charlie really surrendered to God’s Will. Pride and pure stubbornness had stood between the obedience of following God’s advice, which all resulted in many unnecessary trials.
Charlie and wife Mary have pastored, evangelized, and lived among many cultures, teaching about Jesus Christ and His Crucifixion for more than forty years. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage and continue to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ on various sites online.
In many of Charlie’s sermons, he always allows the listener to ponder the thought of how pride comes before the great fall, a lesson many has yet to learn.
