The day began eroding with no hint of a valentine wish. "It's okay", I told myself and sat down to watch TV. I flipped the channel to a Christian station and listened to Pat Robertson. He talked about the legend of Valentine's Day and how it grew in popularity. Pat explained, "there was a Christian prisoner in Rome named Valentine, who was soon to be executed for his faith". His captors asked if he wanted to speak any last words before his death. He tenderly replied, "I want to send a message to my wife". They granted the request and his note simply said: "Your Valentine".
My heart welled up inside and tears formed in my eyes as Pat announced this was a true story. I felt vulnerable, which led to more self-absorption. Again, my thoughts turned to doubts..."Where is my valentine? Does no one remember me"?
With twilight falling and still disappointed, I decided to take my dog Gus for a walk. While on the trodden path, I glanced over and saw something gleaming, shiny and red. Huh...What? I investigated more. It was a bright red, heart-shaped balloon! When I looked closer, the words said: BE MINE! Whoa.
Wait a minute. How did this balloon get here? I live on sixty, spacious and heavily-wooded acres. Of all the many places and treetops this balloon could have lodged, it seemed impossible for it to land precisely on that narrow walking trail.
When I realized my heavenly Father allowed this unlikely occurrence, I was overwhelmingly conquered by His love and encouragement. "Oh, yes Lord, I will be your Valentine"! God is the greatest lover and encourager of all time and eternity. His desire and request for everyone is: BE MINE!
"In this life we have three lasting qualities---faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love".
(I Corinthians 13:13 Phillips)
