Our puny little finite minds can go on overload just trying to comprehend an infinite, ageless, spaceless God. He has never been bored or lonely or wanting for something more.
God was not necessarily a Sovereign then because all there was was Him – God, God and God. All equally God with no need for hierarchy. Circular equality.
So since God was not lacking in any way at all, what “motivated” Him to create? Certainly nothing outside of Him because there was nothing outside of Him. No time, no space, no dimensions and, yet, He was all time, all space, all dimensions.
All that was,
was God.
Why did He create? We humans only think in terms of time and space so it must be asked that at some point, did He come up with a thought that said…
“What if… What if We have something or someone other-than Us?”
I wonder if the prospect of an “other-than” excited God? It certainly pleased Him. Perhaps the idea of Love flowing outside of Himself became the desire of His heart.
The love exchange between the Trinity had been expressed perfectly and continuously. Not eternally or forever because that would include time and there was no time – then. Only constant.
Only God.
The “I am that I am.”
But Ephesians 1:9 says He purposed in Himself (NKJV). Wisdom weighed within the counsel of the Trinity all the ” ifs, ands, and buts” of the Plan. In order for there to be Love outside of Him, there would have to be an “other-than Love.”
“For Love to be pure,” Wisdom projected, “it would have to be chosen.” But chosen from what? Chosen from something other-than Love. And so began the plan. So began “In the beginning…”
He did not create so He could show His greatness. He did not create so He could feel better about Himself or have subjects to relish His Sovereignty.
He created so He could expand His Love.
When He created, He spoke. “Let there be Light.” All the Love that had been contained within the confines of the Trinity was now released. “In the beginning was the Word…”(John 1:1) The power, the motivation, the release was Love. Love exploded, burst forth, produced. Love, the Word, went out from God and created. Love created all things by the Word, for the Word and through the Word (Colossians 1:16) – the Word being a person of the Trinity.
Love was the substance of all creation.
He took such pleasure in the expressions of love within the Trinity, that He decided to expand His good pleasure to an other-than. Someone other-than Himself.
It’s all over and through His Word – the reason He created is the substance of Who He is. And that is Love. It was not out of want or need – it was out of love. For God so loved… (John 3:16)
For all eternity (limitless time) we will be partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) that is a constant expression of love. We were created by Love, for Love, in Love and through Love. Forever we will take part in the awesome expressions of Love within the Trinity. Our worship, adoration, Love will be fulfilled in Him and expressed among each other. We are containers of Love – called to be filled up and then poured out.
Filled up and poured out.
We are called to be expressions of God’s Love released into a world that chooses other-than His love. We are to pour out God’s love not knowing who will receive those expressions and who will despise them. We are called simply to Love.
And we will spend eternity exploring the boundlessness of the riches of His Love and His grace toward us.
Why did God create? He is Love and He created for Love, out of Love, in Love.
