Grandma Lizzie says, I’m the apple of her eye, whatever that means. I know it means something good in grown-up talk. She thinks when I come to stay with her, it’s like Christmas, or something very rare. It really doesn’t happen very often, because we live in Florida, and my Grandma lives in New York City.
Since I’m only three, you’d think grandma might find it difficult to take care of me. Not my Grandma. She’s up while it’s still dark running on her treadmill. I tried that once, and almost killed myself. I decided, I’d have to grow my muscles naturally. Grandma was laughing so hard when she rescued me from that machine. That’s just one of my exploits while at her house. I bet, I know what you’re thinking now----he’s a smart, little guy. Am I right?
My Daddy says Grandma Lizzie is too bossy. He also says she isn’t strict enough with me. I think she’s just fine. Rules are necessary at home, I guess, but not at grandma’s house. A kid needs a break, too. Oh yeah, Grandma Lizzie is my Mother’s mom.
I do have one itty, bitty problem that I can’t help wondering how grandma will handle. I don’t always wake up to go to the potty, I just go, and then I wake up. I’m sure she’ll find a solution, though. My Poppa was a preacher before he went to heaven. He had these funny rubber pants hooked to boots that he used when he baptized people at church. I thought grandma might sleep in those to avoid a drenching, in case my waterworks act up.
Well, I’m almost there, and I know exactly what Grandma Lizzie is going to do the minute she sees me. She’ll pick me up, swing me around until we are both dizzy, and she’ll kiss my cheeks until they are red with lipstick. Then laughing her funny grandma laugh, she’ll say how big I’ve gotten. Finally, she’ll say that strange thing she always says. She’ll say, “Once in a blue moon, we have times like these, with the ones we love.”
You don’t have to be a genius to know when someone loves you. I mean, I’m only three and I know that already. Grandma Lizzie, here I come.
