Kurt looked at Ramon with a mischievous grin before he spoke. “Ramon if I didn’t know you so well I would be angry, but you always loved giving me grief. So who have you chosen as the subject of our discussion today?”
Ramon chuckled and motioned for Kurt to join him. “Well Kurt we’ve talked about the disciples and I thought we’d talk about Jesus. I’ve been reading the gospel of Luke. He was a physician and he put everything in chronological order.”
Kurt opened his Bible to Luke’s gospel and grinned at Ramon. “Well let’s get started and hopefully we can at least hit the high points in Christ’s life.
Every year Jesus and his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover. At age 12 he stayed behind talking with the religious teachers and amazed everybody with his knowledge. His parents returned to Jerusalem and found him after 3 days. Afterwards Jesus went back to Nazareth until age 30 when he was baptized by John the Baptist.”
Ramon nodded his head in agreement. “After the baptism Jesus full of the Holy Spirit was led by the Spirit in the desert where Satan tempted Christ 40 days. Some people don’t think Jesus had emotions, because he was the Son of God, but they forget he was 100% human with all our human frailties. He knew first hand all our sufferings. Satan threw everything at Christ trying to tempt him, but Jesus didn’t sin. We, like Christ, are to pick up our cross daily and follow him.”
Kurt looked at Ramon with a somber expression on his face. “You know Ramon when I read the Word and study the life of Christ my heart is filled with such strong emotions. The next three years of Jesus’ life with the disciples is amazing. He healed many and told many parables to the people. He explained the parables to the disciples in depth. I loved where Jesus rebuked the disciples when they were bringing little children to him. In Luke 18:16-17 says. ‘But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
Ramon placed his hand on Kurt’s shoulder. “My friend I truly enjoy studying the Bible with you. The death and resurrection of Jesus is so profound. It requires a great deal of study to truly grasp the depth God went to so man could be reconciled to Him. At the Passover where Jesus named the person who would betray him and in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was in great anguish, his sweat was like drops of blood and he was exhausted from sorrow is heartbreaking. Jesus was a man of prayer and he taught us to take everything to God in prayer.”
Kurt patted Ramon‘s knee. “When I talk about the crucifixion of Jesus I am truly humbled. When I think of those lashes and what it did to his back. Than he carried that cross across his back. That was just a part of his suffering. When he was placed on the cross God placed our sins upon him also. Can you imagine how alone he felt when God could not look upon him because of our sins. Christ endured everything just to save us. We have no excuse if we don’t accept him as our Savior.”
Ramon lifted his head with tears in his eyes. “Kurt when Christ rose from the dead he appeared to the women, the disciples and over 500 people before he went to Bethany where he ascended to heaven. They worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. When the Holy Spirit filled the disciples they boldly proclaimed the good news. That is so amazing. Well Kurt it is getting late. We can continue studying about Jesus life tomorrow. I enjoy spending our time together discussing the Bible. Until tomorrow my friend.”
