And it came to pass in the year (most probably BC 5) the people of Galilee were heavily burdened with taxes and made their way to Bethlehem to pay that which was due.
And behold there was a certain good man and his blessed wife. She too was burdened - with child. So the man lifted his wife and put her on to Aza, the faithful camel, and they departed to Bethlehem.
The stars lit the skies and as Aza lumbered to the end of the ninety mile journey and reached into Bethlehem behold the woman said:
“Dear husband, it is near my time. I am now heavier than before. We must seek a place so that I can give birth.”
And so the man whose name was Joseph made haste to the Olive Inn for he and his wife Mary to abide. But there was no room. He rushed to the Alabaster Inn but there was no room. Then Joseph, nearly stumbling in the dark, ran to the Grape Wine’s Inn but there was no room. And he trembled with fear and went back to the place where Mary was.
“No room, “ echoed Joseph. “Well I still have room in my heart for you Mary and I must find you a place. And they looked around in awe and Joseph wanted to go back to the Olive Inn to see if the Inn-keeper could find any place for Mary.
And straightway they saw a stable.
“Over there,” said Mary, lowly. “Come, let us hasten. There is no time left to look for another place.”
And so the two quickly made their way through the bushes and Joseph made a bed of hay for his wife Mary. Then he took off her sandals. And behold there was cattle doung all around which gave a foul smell. But Mary did not murmur as she knew they had made the right choice at the right time.
“Baa! baa!” bleated a tiny lamb as he gave reverence.
“Jesus!”, smiled Mary. “Born in humility.”
“Baa!, baa! baa!” the sheep chorused.
In the town, feint lights peeped through from the inns but that night the whole world was lit with an everlasting light cradled in the arms of the blessed Mary.
Behold! Joseph, a village carpenter and the Virgin Mary had made the right choice, at the right time.
The little stable was transformed into the throne of a King, a Prince. It was blessed with a new identity.
And Mary laid there and pondered:
“Would the people of the world make room in their hearts for Jesus?”
This same Jesus, born in a stable, would one day turn water into wine – at a moment’s notice and at no cost.
Mary knew that within hours the sun would give birth to a new day and a little town boy would go running and shouting:
"Bethlehem News! Bethlehem News! Come in the square and listen to Bethlehem News!"
