“What do you think heaven will be like?” I usually get a dreaming picture of seeing loved ones again, meeting Jesus face to face, glorious music, crystal sea, streets of gold, etc. I knew by his tone he didn’t mean tears of joy. The Bible says God will wipe away all our tears (Rev. 7:17, 21:4 in KJV) and I really don’t think that’s what the verse meant.
Obviously my friend had put some thought into his answer and I would have to do the same.
Later I thought about the tears of joy; yes, I’d have them alright. Tears because I had made it, really made it to heaven. Even though Jesus promised eternal life for all who accept Him as their Savior (John 3:16)it's still sometimes abstract, not a clear reality now. Tears of joy at meeting family members again. Tears of joy for reasons I can’t even imagine in this life.
But would I have tears of regret for all the willful sins I had committed, for the loved ones who didn’t make it to heaven, the souls who I didn’t witness to when led, all the money I had wasted, the toys I bought for myself when the funds could have been used to further God’s kingdom on earth, the time I wasted when I should have been in His Word, the sick people I didn’t visit, the people I written off because I thought I was better than them, and, oh, so many, many more things?
My friend was right. All of us will have tears in our eyes when we get to heaven. I know I will.
“Dear Precious Lord and Savior, please lead me today and everyday in the way You want me to live so that when I do see You face to face I will have tears of joy and not tears of sadness. I love You Jesus, my Strength and my Redeemer. In Your Name, Amen.”
