Of Old Black Joe."
"I'm sorry, son,
But it's banned you know."
"Well, how about Mike
The big Irish Cop?"
"Sorry, Danny Boy,
That too has been dropped."
"Well, what can you read me,
That will be alright?"
"Lets look in the bookcase
Just flip on the light."
Dad checked the top shelf
And the son looked below:
But everything they saw
Had a great big "No! No!".
"What's wrong with Bambi
Or Willie the Whale?"
"You've gotta be kidding, Son?
PETA would throw us in jail!
"They say that it's cruel
And all of that guff;
I've never understood it
But they're getting real tough."
The two sat in silence
On the side of the bed.
Not a word was spoken
And nothing was read.
Danny's eyes filled with tears
As he sniffled "Good Night",
And his father leaned over
And turned out the light.
But he heard him whisper,
As he ruffled his hair,
"Do you mind if I join you
While you say your prayers?"

It's been twenty years
Since I knelt next to Dad,
But it's the greatest adventure
That I've ever had.
We knelt in the darkness
With our eyes shut tight
And both talked to God
About our troublesome night.
Early the next morning
At the crack of dawn,
Dad had a heart attack
And in minutes... was gone.
But I've often wondered
Was Dad aware?
Had God clued him in
During that late night prayer?
One thing I'm sure of
Is that God knows the worth
Of giving us fathers
Down here on...
Oh Yes, this crazy, mixed-up Earth.
