And words I can not prod,
I open to the Psalms and lay
Them at the feet of God.
I've found that David's songs can be
The perfect place to start,
Each one a precious melody
After the Lord's own heart.
And as I sing those songs of his
I always reach my goal,
Soon I am in communion with
The Lover of my soul.
For David the beloved king,
Ruddy, handsome in face,
Delighted to take his harp and sing
Before the throne of grace.
Psalm after psalm, he boldly sang
Of praise, of pain, of fear,
The words that David's heart proclaimed
Were music to God's ear.
Pouring his heart out, so distressed
In maskils*, songs, miktams*,
He pleaded, praised, also confessed
His utter need in psalms.
He sang of new songs from the Lord
Who pulled him from the clay,
His words went forth in one accord
And through the psalms he prayed.
He called to God to guard his life,
To slay his enemies,
Protect him from the bonds of strife
And bring him victories.
And when he sinned against the One
He loved and held so dear,
A contrite song of confession
Allowed him to draw near.
Walking through the shadow of death
He found his soul restored,
A table prepared for his rest
By his sweet shepherd Lord.
He found it good to praise on high
With timbrel, harp, and lyre,
Exalt his God above the skies,
Extol his heart's desire.
And when they brought the ark to him
And set it in the tent,
A song of thanks from deep within
Rang forth so jubilant.
I think that when King David died
Praise burst upon his lips,
Because his heart personified
Worship!
Worship!
Worship!
So like King David my own lips
I will so fill with praise,
That every breath become worship
This moment, and always.
Henceforth, today, forevermore,
My worship I will bring;
O psalmist's heart, open the door
Of praises to my King!
