One night after a recent craft night, this thought went racing around in my mind, "What is the purpose of Scrapbooking?" Before you start to explain it to me, please know I really do know it's purpose. I know it is to make a visible reminder of your family life for your children more than just pictures in an album or box. I wondered what, if anything God has to say about it. Contrary to what some die-hard scrapper's believe, the eleventh commandment is not, "Thou shallot not put photos in albums, Nay, thou shalt scrapbook all your photos."
Try as I might I could not find one verse that talked about scrapbooking. Or maybe I did. I remembered all through the final four books of the Law, God tells the Israelites to gather "Stones for remembrance." Why? So when they passed by the pillars and their children asked, "Daddy, Mommy. What is this pillar for? Why are these rocks here?" They could answer, "Oh honey! That pillar reminds us of God's faithfulness to us.” And then tell the story of God’s faithfulness to His people.
We are also told in Deuteronomy to tell the Law and also God's faithfulness, to our children all the time. When we sit, when we stand, when we are still, when we move around, when we are lying down, when we rise up. His law, His love, His faithfulness should continually be on our lips.
The same is true, or should be true of our scrapbooks. If you scrapbook, or put photos in an album, or shove them in a box, remember God's faithfulness. Leave notes for future generations, so your children, grand children, great grandchildren, can see and follow your legacy of faith in a Faithful God.
Let’s not leave them there though, written down, shoved in a box and forgotten about. Talk about them all the time. We need to scrapbook memories in our heart and the hearts of our children.
We need to make our scrapbooks in such a way that others will see and proclaim, “God was here! I see Jesus working. I see His presence. God was here.” To do any less is to deny God’s rightful place in our craft. But more than that, it is to forget Him and His faithfulness.
