Okay, look. I’m not the best looking fish in the ocean. In fact if truth were told, I probably resemble a clown. My head’s too small, my feet are too big and the middle well, it resembles a barrel. That’s my perception. But what does God say about me?
I am made in His image. What do we know about what God looks like? He has hands, (Exodus 15:17); feet, (Revelation 1:17); back parts and a face, (Exodus 33:23); eyes, (Revelation 1:14); hair like wool, (Revelation 1:14); and His voice is like the sound of many waters, (Revelation 1:15).
I’d hazard to guess that describes the whole human race. It’s what God did with that description of each of us that makes each of us a masterpiece in His image.
He took some clay and molded it into an image; breathed life into it and man became a living soul. What exactly does that image look like?
There are many people that have the ability to work with clay, and there are some of us whose abilities make the clay resemble a lump. That would be my talent. Every time I’ve tried to make a picture, a sculpture of any kind it never resembled what it was supposed to. But God’s work of art always does. Without fail it’s perfect right from the beginning.
He made them male and female and it was very good. When you look in the mirror do you tell yourself that you are very good? Or do you condemn your eyes because they are too wide set or too close together. What about your ears? Do they hug your head or stick out like Dumbo’s? How about your teeth? Any gaps? Are they straight or crooked? Or have they been realigned so that they’re perfect? How about your face? Do you have a high brow, freckles, straight or crooked nose?
Face it. We spend a lot of time looking at ourselves in the mirror, trying to reconcile our features into something they’re not and hoping that someone won’t notice all our flaws.
God also has a mirror. It doesn’t show us what we look like on the outside, but it does show us what we look like on the inside. God said it isn’t the outside that counts, but what is on the inside. Now granted if we took off the skin we would all run for cover. Who wants to look at muscles, blood vessels, bones, organs, and sinew? Not me. Unless of course you’re a medical major that would definitely not turn me on. But that is not what God is talking about.
God’s work of art consists not in what we look like, or how He made us, but in what our thoughts and motives have made us to be. Beauty is only skin deep. We’ve all heard that before, and with God that is very true, for with God beauty is found in a broken and contrite spirit. It’s in how much we love our fellow man, and put God first above all other things in our lives. His masterpiece is in words and actions, thoughts and deeds.
When I think about God’s masterpiece I picture His son, Jesus, hanging on a cross. There is no better picture of redemption, grace, mercy, or pardon for sins than that.
Yes, I’m made in His image. I have feet that willingly go where He leads me, most of the time. Hands that help those who need it, when I’m not thinking about myself, a voice that is respectful, honest, and always willing to give a good report about another person, when I’m not passing along a bit of juicy gossip. My face is never set in anger. My eyes never glare with hate and discontent, and my back parts are never turned away from Him.
Have you accepted Jesus as Your Saviour? Then you are clothed in robes of righteousness. He forgives you every time you sin, and He always looks at you with the utmost love, just like the masterpiece He created you to be. It doesn’t matter what you think of yourself, but what He thinks of you. When you accept Jesus as your Saviour and Lord he cleans up the bad stuff, and makes you into His image, a beautiful masterpiece.
Oh by the way, I really don’t have a small head, big feet, and am shaped like a barrel, but I am God’s Masterpiece.
