I used a cake mix, but forgot that it listed eggs as a necessary ingredient. It turns out eggs are the glue that holds the cake together. Let everything become a learning experience, I say.
I had cooled the layers while making my turquoise icing. I wondered why I’d never seen a cake in such a delightful color?
It took a little longer than I thought and I was just putting the last swirls of icing on the cake when my darling husband arrived. I was so proud. If only I had had a camera I might have gotten a picture of it before . . . before the incident occurred.
He was congratulating me on my success when suddenly a crack appeared in the cake from east to west, dividing the cake in two. As I saw the landslide occurring before my very eyes I panicked and did the first thing I could think of to keep the cake in one piece. I slapped my hands into both sides of the cake and like Ber’ Rabbit in “Tar Baby” I found letting go a bit of a problem. I knew the moment I let go the landslide would continue until each side of the cake would rest on my turquoise table.
I didn’t have long to ponder the problem because as I gazed down at the situation another fault line appeared; this time going north and south. I could see the cake was now in quarters. Still grasping the cake with my sticky turquoise fingers, I starting shouting instructions, like a surgeon who's operation had gone terribly wrong!
“Quick grab some toothpicks and start sticking them in!”
He tried but the cake continued to break into smaller pieces and by the time it had completed it’s grand finale it had become a pile of crumbs, being stuck together with, you guessed it, toothpicks, turquoise icing and 2 hands.
“Forget the toothpicks, they’re not working. Get me a large bowl!” My wonderful husband rushed to procure me one from the boxes of wedding gifts. I scrapped everything into the bowl and announced my new creation; the Bowl Cake! No need to fret over slicing, just scoop it out. Why hadn’t someone thought of this before? It was 1959 and the pudding cake had not yet come out. I was quite the trend setter.
As wonderful as I tried to make it sound, I made him swear that if his mother paid us a visit there would be no mention of this creation. Some ideas are just ahead of their time.
When I first got up the nerve to share my experience with a friend she replied, “That’s why I always use cake mixes. Even a fool can bake a cake with a mix.”

I think the stronger ending is your next-to-last paragraph. And be careful of "it's" instead of "its."
This was absolutely delightful.
