The bible records three specific times when one man acted as God’s fireman. Fire came down from heaven on a sacrifice. Fire came down and consumed the captains and their fifties. Fire will come from the mouths of the two witnesses.
Who is the one man who has this power with God? Elijah.
The first instance that is represented was Elijah’s challenge to king Ahab on top of Mount Carmel. He put forth the challenge to the prophets of Baal. To make it more interesting, and to show beyond a shadow of doubt, he poured water over his sacrifice. When called upon, fire came out of heaven from God and consumed not only the sacrifice, but the water too.
The second instance was when king Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber, and he sent messengers to Baalzebub to enquire whether he would recover or not. He did not send them to Elijah, but it was Elijah who met the messengers and sent them back to the king to tell him that he would not recover.
Ahaziah wasn’t willing to accept that judgment, and sent three captains and their fifties to Elijah to bring him back to the palace. The first two captains and their fifties were consumed when Elijah called down fire from heaven. The third captain pleaded for his life and that of the fifty with him, and God told Elijah to go with him.
The third instance hasn’t taken place yet. It will occur during the Tribulation when two witnesses will stand in Jerusalem and witness about Jesus Christ. When anyone comes near to harm them, fire will come from their mouths to consume them. The two witnesses are Enoch and Elijah. Neither have tasted death, but will do so for three days before God takes them back to heaven.
Even though Elijah said: If God be God, and if I be a man of God. He had no doubt in himself about his position with God. However, the people he prophesied to didn’t know his God, and he wanted them to doubt their position with their gods, and show them that there is only one God, and that is Jehovah Elyon, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Elijah was last seen in a fiery chariot. He will be seen again just prior to Jesus glorious return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. From his mouth will come fire to consume all those who come near to harm him.
Are you a fireman? When you speak are the words in your mouth a consuming fire that will pierce the hearts of every man you meet?
Just as Elijah was a fireman for God, so too, we should know our position and act accordingly.
