Then Patty had grown up, married, moved away, and had children of her own. But she had never forgotten how grateful she had been when she, as the youngest sibling, had won. She could still feel the congratulatory hug she had gotten from her grandmother. Her siblings had never known “their secret“.
She had been looking so forward to this visit to her parents’ house because her Grandma would be visiting this year also. On the second day, her son had come to ask if Patty wanted to come outside to play Hide and Seek with all the children. So she just naturally went and asked the frail matriarch if she wanted to go outside and watch her great grandchildren play their favorite game. A tear appeared in the corner of her Granny’s faded blue eyes as the elderly woman calmly explained that she couldn’t get around now like she used to so would have to decline the offer. Her grandmother continued in her soft voice, “I was an only child and always looked forward to visiting families with children so I could play with them. Hide and Seek was my favorite pastime. Then when my children got big enough to play I enjoyed the game with them. I was reminded about all the good times I had as a child when I had someone to play with. But, by the time your generation came along, I couldn’t run and play anymore. So, I just sat in a comfortable chair and helped all of you by pointing. That way I felt I was still playing.”
Did she just say that she had not only helped her, but had given assistance to everyone of them? The thought raced in Patty’s mind before she could assess her feelings. Hoping her silent gasp wasn’t detected, she derided herself for being disappointed to hear that she had not been so “special” after all.
Bringing herself back to the present, Patty leaned over and hugged her grandmother’s thin frame. She managed to murmur, “Thank you, Grandma, for helping us enjoy our childhood games. We all love the good memories we shared with you.”
Then as she pulled away and started to stand back up, Grandma took her hand and gently pulled her back close. With a mischievous smile, and a twinkle in her eye, she said, “But Patty, you are the only one I have ever told that I helped all of you. I think each one thought I was just helping them. But because you are “special to me“, I wanted to tell you my little secret.”
