Storm clouds settled over the land as far as the eye could see. The wind picked up and blew everything around that wasn’t attached to anything. The streets were empty around the city.
Inside the cozy warmth of a house fear settled on the faces of the family who lived there.
“Mother, it’s a powerful fearsome storm coming our way,” the boy said.
“I wish your father were home. The storm will be here before he is I fear,” Mother said.
“Mother that man was in town. The one that was there when we were here last,” the girl said.
“What man?” Mother asked.
“That man who healed my friend. Remember the one who was crippled since she was born,” the girl said.
“Oh, yes. He came to celebrate Passover with his followers,” Mother said.
“Yes, Mother, but, there was a trial. I heard about it,” the boy said.
“What kind of trial? There’s never been a trial on Passover before,” Mother said.
“There were Roman soldiers in the streets,” the boy said.
“I knew your father had been called away on some special business last night. I tried to tell him not to go with Passover on us,” Mother said.
“That man that healed my friend, is the one that’s on trial,” the girl said.
“Why would he be on trial? He never did anything to anyone,” Mother said.
“They said it was because he said he was a king,” the boy said.
“What kind of king? The only ruler we have is Herod,” Mother said.
“When I was with my friend, the day that she was healed by the man, and he blessed all of us children, he told a man from the family of one of the rulers of the Sanhedrin that he had to believe in God and he would have eternal life,” the girl said.
“Your father told me about the man. He was one of the rich rulers. He’s probably been called away too,” Mother said.
“No, he wasn’t. I saw him with his family today, getting ready to celebrate Passover. Is it almost time?” the boy asked.
“We have to wait until the time of the evening sacrifice, then we can celebrate our freedom from slavery,” Mother said.
“When do you think the Messiah will come?” the girl asked.
“I don’t know,” Mother said.
“That man who is on trial, some say he is the Messiah,” the boy said.
“When the Messiah comes, they won’t put him on trial like a common thief. He will lead us out of slavery to Rome, and set up His kingdom here on earth,” Mother said.
“I heard him say that he had to die, so that all men would be saved,” the girl said.
“Now that is nonsense, children. Dying can save no one that person would be dead, and we would still be under Roman law. Now let’s get ready to celebrate Passover. I wish your father were here,” Mother said.
Thunder and lighting split the sky, and the earth shook. The curtain in the temple split from top to bottom. On a hill just outside Jerusalem stood three crosses. On the middle cross, hung a man unrecognizable to the crowd, a crown of thorns on his head, stripes marred his naked back, and nails pierced his hands and feet.
He lifted his head to heaven and cried with a strong voice, full of compassion. “It is finished.”
John 12:35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
