I know people always say we can’t take anything to Heaven with us, but I don’t think this entirely true. Although, I can understand their point of view. We spend most of our lives chasing wealth, position, fame and assets yet we would not be able to leave this earth with any of that. So, it is partly true that we can’t take anything to Heaven.
I am however bent on taking something with me from here to Heaven. In fact, not just a thing, but a whole boatload. I don’t want to get to Heaven empty-handed. To my surprise, I found that I am actually expected to bring something along with me. If you are probably surprised by this statement, you are not alone. I was shocked to find out as well. Because our minds have been wired to think that we are not able to take anything with us, so we just focus on doing the best we can do to acquire the earthly treasures which we know we are going to leave behind anyway.
If we knew that we could take something to Heaven, I believe we would probably spend more of our time and energy on getting that thing prepared for Heaven. However, this is not the case and therefore we get to Heaven empty handed when we are expected to bring something along. How did I come to know about this, you ask? Well, let’s find out what Matthew 28:19-20 tells us.
In those verses, Jesus tells us to go and make disciples of all nations. Disciples are people who have come to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and are following His leading to becoming just like Him. Moving from being under the bondage of sin to being saved assures you of an eternity with Christ in Heaven.
Therefore, every time someone comes to Christ because we went out to speak to them or portrayed the character of Christ, we got that person ready for Heaven. This person could be a friend, a family member, colleague, schoolmate or a stranger. The step we took in leading the person to Christ, gives us the assurance that we are not going to Heaven alone or empty handed but we will be going with something, which is another person.
We also know this is expected of us because Matthew 28:19-20 is not a suggestion but a command. A command we seem to have taken very lightly, myself included. This is one of the verses that show us that we can take something or in this case someone to Heaven with us from earth.
If we truly believe that Heaven is our home and all the things we run around to accumulate on this earth will all perish in the end, then there is only one thing we can do. We can focus more on leading other people to Christ through the help of the holy spirit because at the end, that’s all that would matter. Also, we would be happy to know that they are in a better place with us and did not perish.
Its good to know that there isn’t any limit to the number of people you can bring. It’s like going on a trip with no limit on the number of bags or the baggage size. How cool is that?
Now I guess, we all know what we can take with us to Heaven. I hope we will all work on getting these people ready because no one knows when Christ will be coming and so we have to approach it with urgency.
If you would like to have an idea about how it feels to go to Heaven with someone, just try watching a movie on the Exodus. I recently watched the Prince of Egypt and the beauty of Moses walking out of Egypt (the picture of slavery) with all the Israelites on the way to the promised land (a picture of Heaven) brought tears to my eyes. It was great for him when he had to leave Egypt alone and not face the torture but even more beautiful when he came back to get everyone out with him.
We have been called to be like Moses too. Let’s get busy. I pray that the Lord will grant us the confidence and the grace to be His witnesses through which He will draw people to Himself.
