Miranda is the eldest of my grandchildren. She is a sweet, loving child who has a smile for everyone. Her heart is generous and she loves the Lord.
Meredith is her sister. She tends to be impish, exhausting, and sometimes a little bit naughty. Her love is in the world.
Together they make quite a team and in their world survival is a must. I never know what they will come up with on a daily basis and always expect the unexpected. They are both beautiful young ladies with long blond hair and sky blue eyes. I will never forget a recent conversation we had.
“Grandma, are you a blond, too?” queried Miranda.
“No, sweetheart, my hair is salt and pepper. That is its real hue. Right now it just happens to be blond.”
“You don’t think at her age it could possibly be true blond do you?” chimed in Meredith.
“Well I guess not, but she isn’t that old! And how dare you suggest she is! She doesn’t look a day over fifty.”
“All right you two. Let’s not get into an argument over my age. I am as young as I feel in my heart and my heart is joyful and young. One of these days when you reach my age, I certainly hope the joy in your hearts makes you feel young too.”
Meredith quickly retorted. “When you are old, you are old. I don’t understand how joy of all things can make you feel younger. Why do you bother to make your hair blond if you are so young at heart?”
“Maybe it’s because I want people to know I am related to such wonderful young women or maybe there is an even bigger reason.”
“Tell us the reason, Grandma. I want to know what is hidden behind the blond head of hair.” stated Miranda.
“Remember I said that right now my true head of hair is salt and pepper?”
“Yes!” both girls exclaimed.
“The entire front of my head is the salt part…a beautiful silver gray. The back of my head is the original color God gave me…a silky dark brown or the pepper part. There are silver threads through the pepper, but more pepper than salt.”
“What has that got to do with anything?” Meredith wanted to know.
“The silver in my hair does remind me that I am getting older, but as of yet, I haven’t reached full maturity in God’s eyes. Every day I learn more about Jesus and our loving Father. To attain all the wisdom I can from God’s word is a goal greater than anything else. I want to be able to truly understand the truth in the Bible.”
“Oh, Grandma. There are so many truths in God’s word it could easily take a lifetime!”
“It won’t take me that long! I don’t think I need to know all those truths!”
“Maybe you do and maybe you don’t my little angel, but if I were you Meredith, I would get started on them right away. You may be surprised at what you DO need and what you don’t. Maybe you should join your sister when she is reading her Bible. It just might do you both some good.”
“Yeah, it couldn’t hurt, baby sister, and maybe between the two of us, we can understand more.”
“Anyway, as I grow older, my hair is slowly turning to silver while I gain more understanding as the years roll. I see my hair as my crowning glory and once it has all turned to silver or ‘salt’, then I have become mature in God’s eyes. There is a big difference between being old and being mature. Yes, I am old in age but not in heart. Yes, I am old in years, but am not yet mature. When my hair is all ‘salt’ then there will be no more blond. Until that time, I am having fun being young at heart and enjoying my granddaughters! In Proverbs 16:31 God tells me, ‘Silver hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.’ The Father is telling me that I can be proud of my silver hair for it is a sign of doing things according to His will. Steadily, I am achieving my crowning glory.”
“So, we should be proud to become salt and pepper heads?”
“Yes my dears. And it WILL take a lifetime of righteousness to mature and for your hair to become silver!”

This could have been a real live conversation. It flowed real well with each person fitting in.
You could use this as a teaching lesson about our hair.
Good layout so that it was easy to read.
God Bless!
Very well done!
God bless~
Maybe some commas breaking up the longer phrases and sentences might strengthen the way it reads.
That last part, "salt and pepper heads"... I LOVED IT!!
You have a gift from God: a good aptitude for writing, and with a little more hard work and commitment, you are going to go far! Keep up the good work! Blessings!
I am so very glad, Mr. Bass, that you received encouragement from the article. That was what it was intended to do...make people feel good about their salt and pepper hair turned silver.
My granddaughters are 19 and 17 respectively. This conversation could have taken place when they were in middle school or early high school.
Again, many thanks to all of you!
God Bless :)
