Never looking down
My face drenched in tears
My body fixed in stiff forward motion
Like a zombie in a flower girl’s dress
“He’s not there”
My mother’s voice echoed in my head
Like a child sneaking out of the house
I crept toward the grave with heart beats in my throat
My toes ripping wet grass
Heeling dead names deeper in mud
As if diving into an oil-drenched ocean
I collapsed head first at the grave
Laid there on top of him, six feet above decaying boxed flesh
Yelling “Are you here?” in my thoughts
No answer
As if being woken from a dream
I stopped crying
Rubbed my eyes free of water and stood up
The sun peeked over the trees
gentle heat dyed drips on my checks
I inhaled fresh air and strolled back
as if in the arms of a lover
My own breath was evidence of not being alone
I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD. Ezekiel 37:6 NIV
