Zedekiah shuffled along quickly, as fast as his ninety-two year old legs would carry him, toward Pierson Park. He was running a few minutes behind schedule and he knew Buddy and the other regulars would be waiting for him. – Although his time every morning with the Lord was never rushed (He and the Lord had been good friends for many years.), he felt an uneasiness in his spirit today and had lingered a bit longer in His presence.
He was glad he had a grocery cart to push. It helped steady his gait. Just a few blocks from home, Pierson Park was almost in view when from behind an aged oak tree darted a hapless lad brandishing a baseball bat. Zedekiah ducked to the side of the cart, the bat barely missing him and hitting the metal cart with a loud clang. The noise startled the young boy; he paused and looked up into the eyes of Zedekiah and started to weep. “I’m sorry, mister. Me and my family don’t have anything to eat.”
“It’s all right son. You’ve come to the right place. I was on my way to deliver food to some homeless friends in the park and I guess the Lord wanted me to stop by your place first. Where do you live?”
Zedekiah and the boy walked two littered blocks to a run-down one bedroom house on State Street. The boy’s family consisted of a single mom, who daily took in ironing to provide for her family, Tommy who was almost ten, and two smaller siblings who looked to Zedekiah to be around three and five years old. Looking through the battered screen door, Zedekiah noticed a clean and neat but sparsely furnished living area. He then turned his attention to the young weary-looking woman who came to the door. “Ma’am, my name is Zedekiah. Your son Tommy here has agreed to work for me every Saturday morning, delivering groceries to my friends in the park. In exchange, he will receive two bags of groceries for helping me out. We came by to ask your permission and to see if he could start today.”
Tommy’s mom, wide-eyed with surprise, broke into a smile. “Why yes, Mr. Zedekiah. That would be fine, just fine.”
Grabbing Tommy’s hand, Zedekiah said “Come on, Tommy. We have work to do!”
Walking out the door, he once more turned to the still smiling mom. “Ma’am, you should be proud of your son who is willing to give up his Saturday morning to help an old man out. I’ll have him home by eleven in time to help you fix lunch.”
“Yes sir, I am proud, very proud. Thank you. Thank you very much.”
“Don’t thank me, Ma’am. Just thank the Lord who is always faithful to provide -- and protect.”
Ten minutes later, the two reached the park, still hand-in-hand.
