Topic: Fame (05/10/12)
Fame is such a broad subject that I feel it is necessary to tame it to a reduced level by describing three types. First we have inanimate objects. Second, we have movies or cartoons. And lastly, various people. The most famous, regardless of which type, is the Bible, so we can begin with it. It doesn’t really fit any category. People believe it is an inanimate object, but in truth it is the living word of God. To people who believe the Bible, it is their life. To people who discredit it, you could really say that instead of life, it is their death.

People can be distracted by the Bible’s candor; by its all-knowing. To someone who has just procured a Bible, who has no idea what it is saying, and no idea how to begin reading it, he or she finds it difficult to actually understand the gems of truth found in it. While it is not a large volume, it can provide a lifetime of study and offers a promise of leading you to everlasting life by believing in our creator. The verse John 3:16 is the introduction to our Saviour. It is the only book you will ever need to study about Jesus and the only one that will lead you to Him. However, it is the Saviour who gives life, and the Bible tells you all you need to know.

An inanimate type of fame is the Statue of Liberty. It stands in New York Harbor and was given to the U.S. by France. People who come to our shores inevitably stand in awe of this famous statue.

An example of the second category, movies or cartoons, is Mickey Mouse. This famous little mouse has endured for years and is still in the minds of people.

Many people remember the book Gone With The Wind which was made into a movie. Both the book and the movie are still remembered. But the movie took on a life of its own. Even the personalities of Rhett Butler and Scarlet O’Hara have become famous. Who does not remember the last line of the movie, “My dear, I don’t give a damn?”

When we think of fame, and who, or what, has made the list, we need to remember some are famous before, during, and after our lifetime. Many of these have been famous, though the flame has gone out. Even animals in nursery rhymes become famous. Remember the three bears?

Our third category is people. Not all famous people are a positive influence. We think of Jeffrey Dahmer, a murderer who became well known because of his numerous killings and his bizarre method of doing so. A positive example is George Washington, the father of our country. He has certainly gained continuous fame. Books have been written about him. He lives in history and his fame will not soon fade, at least as long as there is a United States.

Previously we talked about the Bible. It is important to realize that before the Bible existed, unless you were a Jew, you really knew nothing about God. There were many people before that time that met in groups to discuss ways to live; there were men who spent days and hours discussing the way of life. Socrates was such a man. He was born in 470 B.C. and died when he was approximately 71 years old in 399 B.C. Jesus Christ was not here in the world at that time; therefore, much conversation took place using man’s wisdom concerning life.

Socrates was the father of political philosophy, ethics, or moral philosophy. He was famous for his method of posing a series of questions which, they thought, brought out their valid beliefs. He tried to improve the Athenians’ sense of justice which might have been the reason for his execution. At any rate, he was executed by poison, which he was forced to take.

Throughout the corridor of time, there have been many famous people. Some still retain their fame; others are no longer remembered. However, only the Bible is considered to be “the living Word of God.” Should we, therefore, rather than seeking after worldly fame, develop character to maintain a good name, for “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.” (Proverbs 22:1)

This is a really nice essay. The first paragraph is intriguing. I've really never thought about things being famous, but the way you explained it, it made a lot of sense.

Often when a person talks about too many things, I suggest they narrow it down and just focus on one. I loved what you said about the Bible, it would have stood on its own without the other examples. However, with that said the other examples were good too and writing about all three (or four) worked better than I might have guessed. The only transition I had trouble with was when you mentioned the three examples in the beginning and then jumped to the Bible.

The main thing I really question in this is that the only book we need to study is John. That way of thinking can lead down a dangerous path and into religions that pick and choose what parts of the Bible they will read. I know that wasn't your intention but I could see people taking it that way.

I really enjoyed the part about the Bible being the living word. It took on a whole new meaning to me when I read your words. You did a great job of discussing fame in a creative and different way. You also did a wonderful job of bringing your message full circle.
