You could be strolling in a meadow on a clear day. But when it starts to rain, you notice them. As they fall from the sky, abandoning their place in the clouds, they impact everything they touch. When they land, they make what they land on … wet. In other words, when they land, they make what they land on more like them.
Whether they fall on the roof of your home, or beat against the window of a tall office building, you hear them. The building could be a massive steel structure. Yet the sound of raindrops, these drop outs from above, catch your attention. They remind you that life really is under the providence of Another. For you see … no one orders raindrops. No one schedules them. They just happen.
And when they fall, they refresh what they fall on. Depending on how many of their friends come along for the ride, they can soak and saturate their landing place. Yet still they have only one purpose, one aim … to make what they fall on more like them. More wet! They come with the ingredients of where they have been, from above, and bring a glimpse of that to us below. Refreshing. Cleansing. Raindrops.
And just as the rain is ending, there is a quiet, almost solemn stillness in the air. But if you listen carefully, all you do hear is raindrops. The sound they make as they fall from leaf to leaf, from tree top to rooftop, and finally falling on the ground below.
After the rain has stopped, the raindrops remain … in many cases for some time. You can feel them on the grass. You can touch them on the leaves as you brush by. You can see them streaming down the sides of houses all around you. Long after the storm that brought them is gone, the raindrops stay to remind us that the act of washing and feeding continues. Pretty impressive little guys … these raindrops!
You know, God created each of us to be a raindrop. He created you to be a source of refreshing, healing, and renewal to every place you land. He created you to be more like Him so that when you touched others, you could make them more like Him too.
Funny thing though about raindrops – they don’t get to decide where they fall. They just do. Where they fall doesn’t play a part in their goal. They don’t determine that falling here or there is better or brings a greater impact. They just fall … and then do what raindrops do. Make everyplace they land wet.
I wonder if they can teach us something. I don’t know if raindrops ever have issues with identity. I’m not sure if they ever wonder why they are raindrops, probably not. And perhaps there is the lesson. To spend less time wondering why God made us the way He did and why He created us with the gifts He chose. Maybe then we could enjoy the continual impact of touching others … like our little friends from above. Then, we could truly make everyplace we land more like Him.
