Since the birth of time the world has seen different histories come and go. There has been nature centred histories and also man-centred histories.
We correctly remember that the Bible gives details of the era of the flood where only Noah and seven other people survived. No man had a hand in that one. That gone, we have the history of sodomy. People made bad news for all the wrong reasons linked to sodomy. That soon caught up with them and the whole population of Sodom and Gomorrah perished.
We had the era of primitives. People lived of gathering wild fruits and hunting. Thought this is still resistance to modern era of technology in some parts of Africa.
Then came the time of discoveries, inventions which helped people move from one continent to another on water. Histories were made. Civilisation spread but also with the feet of clay by our European friends. The African man became a commodity of mere business. Europeans and Arabs scrambled for the black man, rounded him up and ferried to South America to work in plantations as slaves. Back to the slavery experienced by the Hebrews in Biblical times in Egypt.
We have seen an era of vicious and guerrilla wars in Africa, perpetuated by people of double standards. They preach peace in the day and ferry guns at night to these regions. Thank God! That is soon becoming a past era and peace is coming in.
Apart from that, there has been a wave of technology making history now. There are numerous human-friendly gadgets. Among them computers – desk tops, laptops and I hear there are palmtops. I am yet to see one. Cell phones have crept in, making communication much easier. Today, pastors can pray for the sick on cell phones at any time of the day.
This is wonder news, radios and televisions have survived the taste of technology and they are still being improved however, they are core to communication. There has been a strong dependence on them in spreading the word of God. Their transmission target areas is vast and so many people can tune in and listen to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
They have helped to bring much desired changes in communities we live in. Many people tune in to such stations which also gives them hope and encouragement for their life as they face it daily. And many more have testified coming to Christ through such channels of communication.
But there is also a downside of these technological advances; the internet gives us social networks (twitter, facebook, etc) which can be wrongly used. But they have been used to bring good changes for peoples’ benefits. Mobile phones have been used to challenge governments as was the case in Mozambique.
This era empowers a common man with a silent but strong voice. With current happenings in some African countries, Tunisia, Egypt, this means leaders should not take people the God has entrusted in their hands for granted. They have a helper who hears
their cries.
But as time remains ageless we may see a lot friendlier changes as man and nature turn the pages of history.
