Now, I’m nearly certain that many have never eaten cheese with apple pie, nor have heard the saying. None the less, they are a great combination. It is just that little touch that makes the apple pie so special.
As far as the “kiss without the squeeze” goes, most of us understand that the touch means as much as the kiss itself. A simple hug can be an important part of life.
I recall a very special time in my life, when one statement and one hug, were worth more than a thousand kisses.
Our son, Vernon, was killed in a car accident, and our world was turned totally upside down.
My husband, Paul, was totally unable to drive our car to the hospital to identify him. Somehow, God gave me the strength to perform the task, but after all arrangements were made, I could hardly function.
Everyone was very kind, and the touch of friends meant so much, but the special touch came a day or so later, when my husband and I were standing beside our son’s casket. This was on one of the many trips to see Vernon once more before the funeral was to be held.
Paul gently slipped his arm around me and held me close. He softly whispered, “I am so sorry that you lost your son.”
I can still hear those soft words, and feel the comfort of that hug. There was no doubt in my mind that he was grieving as deeply as I, but still had the capacity to show his caring for my loss. Those were the sweetest words my husband had ever said to me. Those words and that tight squeeze brought me back to reality. Things were not going to change, Vernon’s death would never go away until eternity, and I needed to fully appreciate what I had left in life.
As much as that hug meant to me, I cannot imagine the depth of feeling there will be, when I am led to my Savior, and feel the touch of His nail-scarred hands. That will be the ultimate touch.
