promotion. Which she expected to come any day now.
True one shouldn’t expect anything, but Rebecca had no doubt she was the best and most aggressive at the advertising firm. Qualities Rick Statford her boss seemed to feed on.
She pulled a mirror from her top desk drawer. Her jet black hair secured in a tight twist. A light dusting a pink blush and gloss on her lips. She kept it simple. No time for getting “dolled up” as Rick put it. This was business not a beauty pageant.
A light tap on her office door.
She slide the mirror into the drawer.
“Come in.”
Rick Staford entered. His tall slender frame dressed in a black Armani suit.
"Such class." She thought.
She picked up the cup of fresh Starbucks sitting on her desk and took a sip.
Rick took a seat in one of the small black leather chairs in front of her desk. Rebecca quickly noticed he wouldn’t look at her.
Her heart skipped a beat.
“Rick.”
His dark brown eyes met hers.
“Rebecca, I didn’t want to be the one to tell you…but-”
“But what?”
Rebecca sat straight up in her chair. A million thoughts racing through her head.
A train wreck waiting to happen.
He darted his eyes.
“The Dennison contract fell through.”
Rebecca’s mouth dropped.
“I worked for months on that account. It was a done deal.”
“I know you did. It seems like you let the ball slip on the follow up Mr. Dennison requested.”
Rebecca started to speak, but the words escaped her. The realization slammed into her like a bus.
She had delegated that part to Chris. Whom now as she recaleld had been fired the next day.
She sank in the chair.
“I am also sorry to tell you, but we have to let you go.”
“What?! I have worked harder than anyone here. One mistake and I’m gone.”
She swore under her breathe.
“I’m sorry. I fought for you, but Derek said no.”

It had been three months to the day Rebecca had been let go. She hadn’t found work as of yet. Bad ecomony.
She sat staring out the window of her fifteenth floor apartment.
There was nothing in particular she was looking at. It was the voices that had her attention.
Those voices which called to her day and night. She couldn’t remember the last time she had gotten a full night of sleep since that dreadfull day.
With no friends or family. No more work. The cable and cell phone were off.
Quietness had consumed her once vibrant world. The red walls in her living room now screamed at her. What she once considered elegant was now just painful.
“Stop!”
Tears filled her eyes. In her most desperate hour she stood alone. She had made her life around nothing. The thought stabbed through her heart. She had pushed everyone out and for what. To be fired.
She looked own at the street full of people. Going about their business, oblivious to the constant stream of voices.
What were they saying? She couldn’t make it out. It was a jumble of words.
Her attention turned to a man standing on the sidewalk across the street. He was looking up at her. She just stared back.
He slowly lifted his hand. A finger protruded, pointing at her.
She watched as his mouth began to move.
That is when she heard it. The one single voice which stood out amongst all the others. A reassuring voice. A voice which comforted her very soul.
The man disappeared, but the words remained.
"I have loved you from the beginning. In the quietness I come to you, seeking you. My child. Find peace and be comforted with the truth."
It was then, the voices returned. As quickly as they had gone, but now she heard them clearly.
The voices called to her by name and resounded the love of the creator.
Her eyes could see and her ears could hear.
The truth.

Rebecca stepped back away from the freshly painted crisp white walls. She held the roller loosely in her right hand, admiring her work.
It was finished. New paint and new life.
