I couldn’t believe it! Here I was standing at the graveside hearing the words “and we commit his body to the ground; earth to earth; ashes to ashes, dust to dust. The Lord bless him and keep him, the Lord make his face to shine upon him and be gracious unto him and give him peace. Amen.” I’ve heard those words many times before and they always seemed so final. This time was different.
Today, I stood at the graveside feeling almost jubilant. The newly dug up brown earth surrounded the deep, dark, ominous hole in the ground, which was waiting to receive the body of my friend. However, this is not what I saw. Instead, I saw the beauty of what is to come. I saw the life giving, mineral rich, brown earth opening up its body. It was ready to receive a most worthy plant that had bloomed in its season, and was now ready to return its seed to the ground. I knew this seed was good and it would grow. The new life this seed had already received the instant my friend quit blooming, would be far better than anything my friend or I could ever imagine. No wonder the casket was adorned with beautiful flowers; and the sun glistened off the shiny coffin. No wonder the rich brown earth was an inviting, warm blanket, waiting to be placed over the body of my friend. Even the tears shed by the grieving family seemed fitting. They weren’t burying a dead loved one. They were watering a most precious seed which God wanted to grow in his garden. Today, as I watched the coffin being lowered into the rich, life giving, brown earth I saw life, I saw hope, and I saw victory over death. Death is life and the cycle goes on. What an awesome God we have.
