Twelve-year-olds know all that stuff; but add a few years, a few wrinkles and remove some hair – even before it has a chance to pick up too many silver threads – and there you are on the sidelines. Which is fine if everything isn’t suddenly depending on you!
It began as a simple task; until hardness compounded on an industrial-strength level. I only had to email the local paper from our church office with a photo to accompany a news item about our new youth project. It was right on the editor’s deadline, but I had deadlines of my own. Nothing was responding, and life was distinctly not thrilling.
In this case of multiple urgencies, I prayed. The wrong kind of prayer at first. You know the kind that tries to put God in the real picture, as if he needs to be reminded. But then I shifted ground and began to thank him for a solution that I couldn’t yet see…
Suddenly, Barry materialised. Normally he goes straight into the Carpenter’s Shop on our church campus to supervise his weekly woodworking class, but there he was in the office. He came around the reception counter, leaned forward, pushed a couple of buttons and bingo! Game over!
In reply to my thanks he explained: “I also teach digital camera skills at the community education centre.” Wow! What a beautifully soft landing, as God delivered. Right on the button!
God has a great sense of humour, for Jesus once asked a crowd whether worrying would make them any taller; before reminding them to look for how God reveals his control, so they could relax in his provision.
The bible later urges us to praise God: not for everything; but in everything. For, as this soft landing showed me, thanking him for solutions that haven’t yet arrived will distract us from our own frustration and feed a sense of anticipation that gives him room to harness his enormous resources.
From a great distance, or from right under our noses!
