TITLE LET ME IMITATE HIM
I grew up in a large family and from early childhood learned the lessons of sharing and caring. Each day began with family devotions, the day ended with prayers and goodnight kisses. My father was a godly man and always instilled in us a fear and love for our Creator. He watched us grow and reach our potential. We knew all along that his prayers and best wishes were with us. My parents were grounded in the truth of God’s word and constantly taught us by example and their exemplary lives.
Standing by his coffin a few years ago tears streaming down, with a heavy broken heart I glanced at his loving peaceful face and touched his cold hands. Words cannot express my feelings as I thought of the grave where his body will soon lie. But a calm came over me when I remembered that my Dad was in heaven with his Lord whom he loved and served. The hundreds that were at the funeral service underscored that my father was one who loved and cared for others. He loved unconditionally and that went beyond the perimeter of his family. I understood the love of our Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ because I experienced my father’s love day after day.
Dad was a disciplinarian and often ruled with an iron hand. He always lovingly explained to us why he had to do so. Looking back I thank God that even though the rod of correction was painful he was consistent and firm. He paid close interest in our academic and professional endeavors encouraging us to do the utmost for the highest. When you confided in him the secret never leaked. Whether on the sports field or on a picnic he always played the game and enjoyed the fun. I have a great heritage because my parents did their best for us with God’s Word as their foundation.
A verse that my father repeated to us is 3 John vs. 4.(NIV) “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
Now that I have children of my own and watch them grow, O Lord help me to imitate my father and help them to walk in the truth.
