The flight to the east coast was scheduled for 5 O’clock that afternoon. We had been talking about this trip for months. Preparations were being made in bits and pieces but at a slow pace. Work at the office was hectic with two other staff on maternity leave. More and more chores at home were done by the children and my husband. Working together we had made it to this day. There were boxes to be packed, clothes to iron, much more to be done in the kitchen before we lock up the house.
I woke up early and started with the kitchen. All left over food was thrown into the trash. In a little while my seven year old son came in to help clean the counters. I was so delighted when my teenage daughter offered to iron the clothes.
“Where is Randy? Why is he playing hide and seek on a day like this?
Is it not time to get up and jump in the shower even though this is a Saturday? Has he forgotten that we have a holiday planned?”
I could feel my blood pressure rising as I called out, “Randy, please come downstairs and lend a helping hand.”
He has always done things to encourage me to keep the household together, even when I have had a bad day at work.
” But what has happened today?”
When the breakfast dishes were washed, Randy announced that he was going upstairs to complete his packing.
“He had been packing for the past one week and still wants to pack. When am I going to get mine done?” I thought to myself. Soon Amy came down announcing that all the ironing was done. She then decided to complete her chores and be ready for all the excitement that lay ahead.
“ I need to pick up all the items on my list including my bible study books.” I said to myself. Sitting on the beach while Dad and kids enjoy the water I plan to do some serious study. A working mother has limited time for in depth Bile study.
“O, God help me to keep my cool” I prayed under my breath.
We said grace for our sandwiches and had a quick lunch. On and off Randy looked sideways and smiled to himself. I was curious but did not ask. When we got upstairs Randy explained that my box was packed and that every item on my list was included. “Show me the box!” I could not believe my ears or my eyes.
When I opened it, I could not hold back the tears from my eyes. That box had everything I needed and its contents were a reminder to me that my family cares.
Our Heavenly Father can bless us with a loving family, a living Savior and His promises. What more can we ask for?
