Hurricane winds whip, whirl and howl with frightening voice
Puffs of smoke belch as volcano wakens from slumber
Wars of oppression resound with weapons and wailing
Buildings crumble like toys as the earth quakes beneath them
Creation does not sleep
"We know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together..," the New Testament writer declares. Today more than ever, media sources bring images of all the groanings of creation right before our very eyes. The Word of God brings understanding that all of creation seems to be waiting as if near a point of giving birth, its voice calling for deliverance, liberated souls, cleansed creation.
This verse by an anonymous author brings the focus to us as individuals:
As I plodded on in my usual way;
And they rang in my ears again and again,
Repeating in solemn, sweet refrain:
"Only one life, 'twill soon be past;
Only what's done for God will last".
Seeing the devastation from any disaster reminds us how quickly man’s monuments can be reduced to rubble. What we do in daily life may seem to be a plodding along, small and insignificant until put into perspective of the final verse above. In the end, what will all of man’s wisdom, titles, awards, or wealth gain for him? Will it have value in eternity or vanish as a vapor?
Notes: Scripture quote is from Romans 8:22, (KJV), and the verse by anonymous is the first of four stanzas.
