“Wait a minute. Don’t you mean that he would have gotten hamburger but he got steak?”
“Please, don’t interrupt me when I’m telling a story. I will go ahead and answer your question though.
I thought it was supposed to be that way too, when he first said it to me, but he told me he never really liked steak, but loved hamburger. So when I said yes to marrying him he was so delighted, he compared me to his favorite food.
I could have been offended, but how could I be? I was deeply in love and I was happy too. Happy that he had asked me to marry him. I think my whole face must’ve been glowing – but wait a minute, I was talking about how he felt.
Ecstatic is a better word than happy, to describe how he felt. It’s amazing to me that I would evoke such an emotion. His heart was not doing a happy dance, but an overjoyed dance. It showed on his face. I thought my face was glowing…
I know he wondered if I would ever consent to being his wife. I hadn’t exactly made it easy for him to pursue a relationship with me. Once in a great while we still talk about when I had my wall up against any possibility of being with him. My heart was still set on, well, never mind.”
“Wait a minute, your heart was set on what?”
“Um… you’re interrupting again”
“You’re blushing.”
“Yeah, because this embarrasses me. My heart was still set on hoping that someone I was interested in would show interest in me.
Thankfully I wised up and set my heart in the direction God wanted it to go, toward this man who was setting his heart toward me.
We began to plan our wedding; oh what a joy those days were, especially after we had the date set and started getting all the necessary stuff taken care of. He was involved in all of it – choosing the flowers, the cake, the wedding invitations and thank you cards. He wasn’t, of course, involved in choosing my dress. The only thing he specified was that he wanted lace.
The days seemed to pass slowly as we waited for our wedding day, but at the same time, they sped by quickly and pretty soon, we were standing at the wedding altar declaring our vows to love, honor and cherish until death parted us.
Walking back down the aisle hand-in-hand as husband and wife was one of the happiest days of my life; of our lives. In the picture of us our faces rival the shining of the sun, they were so bright.
The years of marriage have flown swiftly by and my husband still tells me after more than 23 years that he’s glad he got hamburger instead of steak.
We are happy and blessed beyond our wildest dreams. Each of us often tells the other that we are more than we ever dreamed of.”
“Wow, that’s great. Thanks for sharing your story with me. It’s fantastic to see a marriage that has stood the test of time and the storms of life. I’m sure you’ve had your storms?”
“Oh my, yes, many, many storms. With God’s help we have survived them and grown through them. Because of them we are stronger and more in love than the day we married. We thought we were happy then… but now… now we are living the joyful life God meant for us. We are truly blessed.”
