“No son, you know I don’t get out much.”
“I know, but I thought….”
Momma had been sick for a long time; since Trevor was born, in fact. She had gone to just about every specialist in town, including a naturalist and had tried every treatment imaginable. But nothing ever worked. It even seemed sometimes that she got worse. She had no energy to help around their shabby house. Trevor did what he could, but a twelve year old could only manage so much.
On top of her illness, mamma was worried all the time. The bills were piling up and she was afraid that the government would take away what little she did have, including her son.
The neighbors weren’t a big help either. They shunned mamma, but they did feel sorry for Trevor and would allow him to rake their yard or clean out the stalls for a little money every now and then.
In fact, that’s how Trevor heard about the man coming to town. As he was shoveling horse manure out of Mr. Jones barn, he overheard the ranch hand telling Mr. Jones about the man.
The kids all talked about the neat things the stranger did. Johnny even saw him once. He said he had spat on the ground and placed the mud he had made in a blind man’s eyes. The man started yelling that he could see! It was a miracle.
Mamma loved hearing the stories about the stranger. She would listen intently as Trevor told her the stories he had heard each day.
“Oh son, that’s wonderful!” she would exclaim. “If I could somehow get to him and touch his clothes, I know I’ll be alright!”
But the laws prevented her from even going out in public. Because of her condition she was looked down upon and considered an outcast.
“Mamma. The man is coming into town. In fact he’s almost here.”
Mamma jumped up. Trevor had never seen his mother move so fast.
“I’ve got to hurry son!”
“But Mamma, you can’t go out there. What will everyone say?”
“It doesn’t matter. I’ve got to get to this man. He’s my only hope.”
Mamma ran out the door and into the street. The neighbors saw her and started yelling obscenities at her. They said a woman like her should not even be allowed in town.
Just as her son had said, the stranger was entering in town. She could tell by the crowd around him. The crowd was so thick it seemed it would be impossible to reach him. She had no choice. She got down on her hands and knees as crawled through the mass of people. She was stepped on, trampled over and in a lot of pain.
Finally she saw him. She made one last lung for him and brushed the tassel by his feet.
Suddenly peace. She knew she was well. She could feel an immediate difference. She knew it! She knew this was the answer.
All at once, the stranger stopped.
“Who touched me?”
Those around him tried to get him to keep going; it seems he was on a mission of some sort. They told him that the crowd was huge, it could have been anyone.
“Someone deliberately touched me.”
Mamma stood up and said that it was her. She told him about her condition and the money she had spent trying to get better. She told him that when she touched him, her problem immediately went away.
Trevor couldn’t believe it. Mamma would finally be able to live a normal life. He never imagined her doing what she did today. But mamma had imagined it all along.
