The waiting area was almost full. Some people paced with a nervous anticipation. Others appeared cocky and arrogant. A few seemed calmly confident. A handful seemed surprised when the proctor ushered one person at a time into the testing area.
“Don't we all take the test at the same time?” asked one of the crowd.
“I hope there are no trick questions,” said Wanda, the worrier.
“How hard could it be? I've heard that the test is not all that complicated,” boasted Bart, the braggart.
One by one, they were asked one question.
“What qualifies you for entrance to these hallowed halls?”
Andy, the athlete, was sure he knew the answer.
“I can run faster, jump higher and throw farther than anyone I know. If it can be thrown, I can catch it. You name the game, I can not only play it, but I can win it.”
Cindy, the celebrity, was just as confident.
“From Malibu to Morocco, everyone knows my name. My face has graced the cover of every fashion and entertainment magazine in the world. Men love me. . . women want to be me.”
William, from Wall Street, thought he could buy his way in.
“I've bought and sold more businesses than you can imagine. I'm the master of mergers and acquisitions. Do you need an endowment? Money is no problem. I have all the money you need.”
Sid, the scientist, had a theory.
“You need me here. I've single-handedly unraveled the secrets of the universe. Biology, chemistry, astronomy, astrology, even quantum physics. . . I've conquered all the fields of study. Do you need something researched? I'm your answer man!”
Edward, the environmentalist, felt sure they could use his expertise.
I'm very big on conservation. I've spearheaded recycling programs and other initiatives to protect the planet. I've been on the forefront of saving endangered species all over the world.”
Polly, the philanthropist, was prolific in her self-praise.
“I've given away millions of my own money for the poor and poverty-stricken people of the world. I'm on the Board of numerous charity and benevolent foundations. I'm always trying to help those less fortunate than myself.”
The question was posed to Tanya, who seemed timid at first, but grew more triumphant with every word.
“I've never been very good at anything. I've never been anywhere, or done anything important. I've made some bad choices at times, in fact, I guess you could say I've been a major screw-up. But, I met a man who told me he loved me when no one else did. He told me that he could take all of the ugliness in my life and make something beautiful. He told me that all I had to do was believe in him and he would provide every thing I ever needed. In myself, I am nothing. . . but, in him I can do anyhing. I fell in love with him, and gave him my heart. I gave him my life. His name is Jesus.”
The proctor smiled, and opened the door behind him.
“You may enter. . . welcome home, good and faithful servant.”
